WTD - Towbar for transporting Beetle
64blackbettle - April 14th, 2015 at 08:29 AM

I'm after a towbar that connects to the front beam so I can tow my Beetle to and from storage. If anyone has one for sale or knows where I can buy one please let me know.

Cheers Dom zero four one eat one double three five eat zero

I'm in Melbourne. I'd prefer to tow forwards. I might get one made by a trailer manufacturer cause it's basically an A frame like the trailer. It might be the best option. Thanks anyway

how do these work, as in how are the front wheels controlled? on a late bug I guess the steering lock would hold them straight (maybe), but what about early bugs, wont the front wheels go all over the place? or am I missing something and they will just happily follow the direction of the tow?

They just follow the towing vehicle like a puppy. It actually looks a bit eerie seeing the steering wheel move as you go around a corner and there is no driver

But the car being towed would have to be registered to tow it. Probably be the same as a lift and tow. Looked into these a while ago and can't tow an unregistered vehicle on them.

Maybe a dumb question - but what do you do for lights (blinkers /stop etc) on the towed vehicle? boat style light board??
Much earier to store than a car trailer!

They would be a bit weird to use the first time.....are they legal in Australia?

The towed vehicle does need to be registered. I used a light board and just ran the (long) wiring lead to my cars trailer plug. The A frame itself needs to be plated as well to show it complies with towing regulations. I think they were sold through Custom Off Road? at Stafford in Brisbane.

Be careful itis the correct width and doesn't slide sideways on the beam or it will rip the torsion bar grease nipples out! Been there, done that.
