I had a 73 model with the factory fitted metal sunroof That i restored.
i sold it about 8 years ago.
if you go onto the kombi club website an search it youll see all the pics and how the sunroof works.
you can buy second hand parts for it off the samba in the u.s.a.
A lot of the parts for the roof are not repo made and are expensive and hard to get.Any new parts made are available such as new cables and cogs from
http://www.eis.com (economy international).
Its very hard to get the roof too slide well with the cogs and cable setup with the goldie winder.
Even though the poptop hole is the same as a westy one the sunroof model have a metal pocket for the sunroof to slide back into inside the ceiling.
It also has 6 drainage holes for the water to drain out of which runs out under the car from the b, c and rear pillars.
So theres a lot to them and hard to get a good waterproof seal.
cheers chuck
Thanx for the msg,yes i know, lots of work ahead of me but worth it,
I have never seen one in OZ,and pretty cool i think, something different too.
Mine has the sunroof pocket and drain holes but no drain tubes
Theres about 12 of them that i found when i did my posting on the resto.
i liked the uniqueness of the roof and thats why i bought mine.
if you dont have your car parked in a garage and out of the rain youll get sick of cleaning up all the water let alone the damage itll do If it wont
seal well.
the drainage tubes are a clear plastic tube and should run out holes in the base of the a pillar, B and rear.
test the holes to see were the water comes out.
blow them out with a air gun and then poor water down them.
If they are blocked you can run some wire down to clear them and try the water again.
get on thesamba.com wrbsite and look up other sunroof kombi, s for lots of help.
theres plenty of them in u.s.a
cheers
Oh forgot to add.
getting the sunroof to open and close by using the winder is
the hardest part to get right.
vw didnt build it to well as they used 3 pieces of plastic to hold the pressure onto the cog to keep the two cables to run evenly back down the two
long aluminium slide guides which i hope you have or good luck finding a set.
You can only buy 2nd hand ones and are usually cracked or perishing so they dont work.
theres no repo ones available and you end up having to slide it open and closed manually.
this is the biggest problem with the roof and the reason why i sold my kombi.
I Just remembered the bently repair manual has instructions on how it goes together and works.
cheers chuck
