Hi Edwa,
How difficult was it to convert to IRS? Can it be done with the body on the pan?
Rob.
Hey Rob, I did the job with body removed. Made my own jigs from another IRS rolling chassis. IRS brackets are standard Taiwanese. Had no template for first bracket, so second cutout on the horn was a lot easier after I made a template from first cutout. Job was not difficult as I have the right equipment, just time consuming. I guess it "may" be possible with body in place, but final welding on top side of bracket could be difficult with limited access. The IRS brackets do not fit as delivered, they require extensive grinding/modification in order to fit. A steel filett must be fabricated to close in the lower side of the bracket/horn. Can send photos if you wish by email? Have not fitted SSP gearbox yet so not sure how much modification to horn is required for CV clearance.
Thanks Edwa, I've got a 1968 beetle with a type 4 motor. I want to replace the gearbox, worn out! but there are limited options and they are costly . I got thinking that if i went IRS i could fit a 5 speed Subaru box and it woudn't cost that much more.I don't want to seperate the body from the pan as the car is a nice original one all in good condition. I guess I will buy a Rancho box or similar and stick with the swing axles. Regards Rob. PS. did you sell your gearbox?
