WTB - Spotlights/ Driving Lights for 1970 VW Bug
vinsueball - December 14th, 2015 at 08:36 PM

Wondering if someone can point me in the direction of locating a set of classic driving/spotlights suitable for a 70 VW bug. Would be good if they had the eyelid visors as well. New or old.

I have a pair of Hellas black back from 72 or so

I bought a set of Marchal replica lights from the US, they are excellent, do not know what your budget is.

I went to the Treasure Chest and found 2 sets

Are these what you need

How about these, may be a bit old school for a 1970.

No hijack intended - but anyone got leads or suggestions on good mounting brackets for the round spot style lights? VWO60 your spotty setup looks real clean and nice. How did you mount them?

vwo60 - December 16th, 2015 at 07:53 PM

They are cut out of 50mm x 50mm x 4mm angle iron, they bolt through the bumper bracket using 2 x m6 bolts and acorn nuts, I machined spacers out of aluminium to lift them up higher.

Hey guys thanks for your replies. The Marchal replicas look terrific and this is the look I'd like to acheive. More chrome then black......just don't know if Ihave that budget at the moment. Like your mountings to vwo60.

I know you can get mountings that fit over the bar mounts and not through them so I think I'll probably go with those.

Be careful what you buy as on a lot of lights you can hear them rust in there box.

Thats for sure chrome plating aint what it used to be

mounting brackets are the hardest thing to find

Yean, that's what I'm finding. A lot of the second-hand ones I like or have seen have got a fair bit of pitting on them. I guess that's the advantage of the black backs !!

Has anybody looked at using the driving lights that folks install on motor bikes. They look pretty good but would they work ??

If it helps I have used these things on a couple of cruisers, normally with HID inserts, but that's coz it getas dark where I live. The chrome lasts well and is pretty good quality, as long as the price isn't $30 (you get what you pay for a bit).
The chromed bike spotlight is a good idea, coz the chrome-is-my-favourite-colour Hoggley boys get grumpy with crap.
If you get a 5.3/4" it will also give you the option to use an efficient auto reflector.

These make the Marchal's look like good value.

I'm using 5.3/4 Harley Davison accessory driving lights as headlights on my Taipan buggy. Fitted with Hella high and low beam inserts. The chrome is lasting well and they weren't too expensive.

vinsueball - January 6th, 2016 at 09:28 PM

Hey robw914, thanks for that. I actually saw some of these on a Harley last weekend and was impressed so I'm on the lookout for similar. Can you remember how much you paid for yours ?
