need cable brakes
macropod80 - May 25th, 2005 at 05:58 PM

I am secretly cursed with an extremely old, vaguely beetlish, VW of the 16inch-wheels-with-cable-operated-brakes variety. Unfortunately, because some dealers are not as reliable as others, all four wheelhubs are completely empty. (As is the tunnel.)
Conversion to safer, new-fangled, hydraulic brakes is not an option (alas - would that life were so easy..)
Ideally I'm looking for a set of old hubs that are still full, from which I can remove all the working parts to transfer to my existing hubs (which have to be retained because they're 'special' ;))
Can anyone in the Victorian corner of the country help? (without actually bankrupting me, like some have offered to do.)

Hi No Brakes,

Do you mean someone has stolen them by Completley empty?

Give me some more information as I have a friend who bought an Oval some years ago only to find it was on a Kubelwagen Chassis and he may have some bits and pieces to help you out.

Let me know,

David

This is going to sound bad, but I once saw at the Kalgoorlie tip a completely destroyed floorpan buggy........ with cable brakes and split case gearbox.......

But that was years ago.

have you ever tried to stop a cable brake beetle? its really weird as you have very little pedal feedback..its scary if some one cuts out in front of you..you need at least 3 more car lenghts to stop over the hydraulic set up! good luck in tracking down the bits..think mark holioke had some bits in melberg?????cheers dsk steve

If you saw my 'car' you'd realise stopping it is not something I need to worry about. Getting it going in my lifetime will be a miracle! I'm just trying to find all the missing bits. I expect this to take several decades.

Keeps me off the streets. ;)

Have you tried getting some cables made up. Look up some cablemakers in the yellowpages.

I think I have a complete early box with cable brakes on it in the back yard. I will have a look.

That being said I am not a big fan of people being vague and dribbling on so I would want some actual details and info on what you were planning to do with the brakes if in fact I did have them and decided to give them to you.

If you don't wish to provide info that is fine but the price will reflect the casue and at this stage they are very very expensive

If you ever get this thing on the road and smash into someone I hope they dont sue you for being so silly
originality on your car counts for nought at your funeral

Guys the guy is obviously restoring a Standard split beetle. They have cable brakes.

Dude, give mark at Imported a call, as he has a standard that he restored a few years ago, and may know where to get some, or even may have some there.....

N!
