1641cc turbo engine - chasing expressions of interest.
2443TT - December 2nd, 2005 at 11:27 AM

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be rebuilding my other engine soon and am preparing to sell it. This is the 1641cc engine that made 165hp to the rear wheels in my car about 6 months ago. 100hp per litre to the wheels! Peak power is made at about 5800 rpm and it revs happily to 6800 no problems. With a little port work which i'll be doing with the rebuild it will make an easy 200 hp at about 20lb boost.

Since then its been sitting on my bench waiting on a rebuild prior to sale.

This engine is built for turbocharging. 7.46:1 compression, so its doey as off boost, and the cam doesn't start working till about 3300 RPM.

Below is the component list from memory. The engine was built entirely out of new parts as follows. I did the shopping list on CB's website and this is what's in it.

Subtotal: $1,776.75 USD!

Plus Scat 5.394" 4340 I-beam rods with ARP bolts cost $149 USD also.

I'd like $3000 for the engine, assembled head to head, and I will build it to spec if someone is serious, wants to make a deposit and/or wants specific changes made. This price would NOT include any header, intake, oil or air cooling related hardware. I can assure you that this is no slap together engine either. I'd supply a record all the internal tolerances during assembly and also hot run the engine with a carburator to be sure its all sweet before I sell it.

Now, as another option I was thinking of setting it up as either a pull thru carb turbo system with a buggy header, complete cooling system, new garrett GT17-220hp turbo etc. I have all the parts to do this, and it would essentially make it a bolt in 200hp engine to fit any buggy. I'd figure this would cost about $5000 to do properly.

Or...

I still have the old efi maifolds, 380cc injectors etc, fuel pressure reg etc, and could set it up as an intercooled blow thru efi engine as well. I'd setup the entire system and sell that for about $6000 I'd figure, excluding an EFI ECU as it would need to be wired to the car when its installed.

Anyone interested? Thoughts or suggestions?

i think i just wet my pants. i would very very much like to purchase the engine from you with the first option for $5000. i will have to maybe work out some sort of arrangement with my parents and/or bank to be able to come up with that sort of money, unless you want to sort out with me, which i highly doubt, a payment plan. let me know what you think? because i would love to chat.....

No payment plans thanks. I need cash as I'm looking at buying a second car for a-b transport, and am going to garage my bug except for the occasional outings.

I forgot to include my contact details... It would be a good idea to call my mobile first as I am rarely within range of the home line. I'm usually downstairs tinkering with some vw engine!

Na, I was thinking of some sort of drop side ute, or maybe a mitsubishi mirage. something cheap that I can have someone ELSE service.... :D

I've had a few requests for pictures too so here they are...

Basically its a long block with sump. The kennedy clutch won't be on it though.

It will be rebuilt to this level as a minimum for the $3000.

VW kid, you should think about insurance with this kind of motor. Could it happen for you? Could you and your car handle it (brakes/ gearbox etc).
I dont want to spoil Ians sale with this awesome motor/ package but you sound young and maybe not thinking about the bigger picture.
Ian, if you put this up about 6 months ago I proberly would of done it.
Good luck, I know how much time you spent on getting your combo right

still for sale?

2443TT - February 2nd, 2006 at 09:04 AM

Yes its still forsale. My spray painter is interested in it for his myers manx as a 1600 turbo so its possible I might have a buyer. I still need to do a strip down, inspect and re-build with new main and rod bearings prior to sale. I hope to do that this or early next month at the latest.

Things have been really busy between my involvement in http://www.qldstreetscene.com  (Cairns based forum) and wibble's engine which is my main priority at the moment i havn't had a chance to tear it down.

looking for a quick easy fix to jam in the back of my Oval.
just seeing what's around.
Unsure whether to just buy a complete engine, or get the engine built with all the parts I have been collecting.

There is nothing quick or easy about a turbo engine. If you hurry any kind of engine you can end up with a disaster.

One thing to seriously consider is where to mount your oil cooler, intercooler, what kind of traction brace you will need, and will the gearbox handle the power.

Don't every try to rush any big HP project..
