Went to install a new TRW Steering Box on the weekend....

D'oh - Pitman arm from the original box doesn't fit - the shaft connecting pitman arm to steering box is smaller dia.

Anyone got a good condition Pitman Arm with smaller dia hole to suit new steering box lying around??????

I assume they are from later models???

Wouldnt it be best to actually know what size you need, measure it and then you know what you are asking for.

Probably a good point but I didn't think I would need to.

As I understand it, for the Beetles & Ghias there were only two sizes large for early and small for laters.

Therefore its either one or the other, but I can measure if it will help people.

I always get confused as to which is the pitman arm and which is the idler arm.

Blurp, I can help you out.

There are actually 2 different steering boxes and 3 different pitman arms over the years.

Boxes.
1. Early (pre 60) big shaft.
2. Late (post 60) small shaft.

Pitman Arms
1. Early (pre 60 - oval) big shaft, small tie rod ends.
2. Middle (post 60 pre 66 - link pin) small shaft, small tie rod ends.
3. Late (post 66 - ball joint) small shaft, big tie rod ends, steering stop arm.

You now have a late steering box so you need a late link pin (60-66 pitman arm)

Do you still have your original steering box? what condition is it in? I might be willing to swap it for the pitman arm you need.

Mike, you are right, he will need a 'middle' pitman arm (small shaft, small tie rod ends) as he is reusing the existing (newish inner tie rod ends). Its always the way - I'm sure we both had at least one each of these things laying around but recently did a big clean up.....only have one early arm left (in addition to the one on the car).

This thread was locked for a minute, now it's unlocked. Weird ....

If he is pulling the early box what is actually wrong with it? Is he just swapping it out cuz he got a good deal on a new one or does it have a bit of slop in it? If is has some slop don't just chuck it I'm insterested in it as with a bit of help from a machinist they can be made servicable for offroad use.

I have a 'middle' pitman arm that is all cleaned up ready for painting.

I think it is a case of some slop/freeplay - it is not too bad but Brad just wanted to ensure the steering sytem was 100%. I'll let him get back to you re. swap etc.

Would be keen for the swap.

The steering box is in pretty good condition - has a littl ebit of free play and a little lump in it but in reality its probably OK.

The only reason I went for a new one is I have just had a heap of work done to the KG - disc brake conversion, IRS conversion new wheels etc plus my little one year old comes for drives - just wanted the piece of mind to know its a new one.

To some this may not make sense why replace if OK - but piece of mind is priceless.

Where abouts on the North side are you - when would be best to come over (happy to come day or night)
