WTD-oil tank for this-
nbturbo - March 29th, 2006 at 09:01 PM

Need an oil tank to suit a motor with a dry sump. It's an Autocraft with a 3 stage pump.

Volkswagenboy - March 29th, 2006 at 09:04 PM

I guess it'd be too expensive getting a custom tank made hey?

No-I can build it myself if necessary-need to know where and how many fittings to weld in.New to this game.

NB, I have a dry sump 911 6 in my Karman. It has a custom built tank mounted in the front. You might consider a 911 tank set up. Heres a pic of the plumbing set up for an early 911.

Cheers

Just realised that the pic might be a bit confusing with out some further explanantion.

The tank actually only has one outlet at the bottom. The exploded diagram shows the different set ups for both the manual trans and sportomatic 911. The plumbing is different for each as the Sportomatic has an external oil pump driven off the end of one of the engine cams.
Oil tank return is also just one back thru the oil filter. :thumb

Bit hard to figure-is 15 an oil cooler.Looks like the filter is screwed straight to the tank-so must be plumbed internally.Pretty flash-looks like a oil level guage fitted as well.Mine has a couple one way valves in the pipe work, which I assume prevents oil draining into sump from the tank when not running.

I'll look thru my archives might have some pics of Dave Stoker's set up for ideas.

Cheers-that would be helpful.

NB the oil cooler is mounted on the engine. The oil passes thru the pump and only passes thru the cooler if the thermostat is open.

This is a typical aftermarket dry sump oil tank.

Thanks-things are looking better now.

Grey 57 - April 2nd, 2006 at 10:45 PM

NB here is a clearer pic of the 911 or 914/6 dry sump oiling set up. Hope this helps mate.

nbturbo - April 3rd, 2006 at 09:21 PM

Thanks-good pic.I assume item 5 is the thermostat.Looks like only one pump section and one pick up point for the crankcase.Does the bottom of the case have a large deep dish to get the oil back to the pickup quickly?

shiftyvw - April 3rd, 2006 at 10:38 PM

correct 5 is the thermostat. the 911 is only a single scavenge stage, and the whole pump is internal inside the crankcase as well. The 911 case is quite narrow at the sump, not squared off like a vw so oil would tend to make its own way to the pickup i would think.

Grey 57 - April 4th, 2006 at 07:26 AM

Yep thats correct 5 is the thermostat. ShiftyVW is right on the money. These motors also have a safety valve that directs oil back to the pump from the crankcase if the line from the tank is blocked. No idea how this works.

vw54 - April 4th, 2006 at 01:24 PM

theres an In n out line and probally better if you add line vents for the breathers as well.

seagull - April 23rd, 2006 at 03:58 PM

Mate send me the size your looking for and I can tig one together out of stainless steel for you & pressure test it . seagull

On my 69 911E ,looked the same as in pics,If had a check valve in line did not work, oil level in tank would equal the sump after sitting all night, after starting would pump excess into tank from scavange side.It didn't hurt anything, just would let it warm up until oil level guage read correctly, and it was nice having the filter mounted in tank, easy access.

is this what your after = one 911 oil tank with filter attachment and oil lines .

nbturbo - June 14th, 2006 at 08:12 PM

Thanks for your reply-should have probably posted something-I made one up a couple of weeks ago.Ended up using an old water fire extinguisher-silver soldered in some steel fittings and used a Type3 rear oil filler tube and dip stick in the top-the dip stick is exactly the correct length.
