have colour coded the front and rear bumpers on a 72 superbug. Does anyone know where i can get some black bumper strips or stick on trims. I have priced new rubber ones but are a bit pricey.thanks Al
it was only 76bugs that vw used rubber strips standard
but u could get them as an option from 68
all the rest just had black electrical tape LOL
Joel
yep electrical tape
I don't think it was standard electrical tape but it could be some sort of PVC tape...
Electrical PVC... usually falls off in hot weather...
the stuff VW used stayed put for 10+ years...
it didn't look as shiney as standard electrical tape..
and I don't think it stretched either....
but I have used electrical tape on My bumpers before....
just look for a duller thicker PVC tape....
I have heard of Beetle owners using the rubber from Kombi bumpers...
but I believe it would be very expensive....
The 1976 Beetles had the front blinkers in the bumper...
so the rubber wouldn't go from end to end continously..
From 1971 Beetles in some European countries had the rubber strips... especially the special editions...
even in the UK... and the US...

Ideal stuff to use on the bumpers is black stick on flat strip as sold by Holden dealers to fit VN Commodore bumper bars. 1 roll would be about $20 and will do two bumper bars. A lot of the strips had a stripe or two in them as well. This stripe will peel off.
thanks helbus. i am an electrican by trade and was avoiding the electrical tape option.
Cheers AL
helbus, how well does the tape go over the dome bolts that hold the bumper to the brackets?
Hi
VW dealers used to sell the tape in various colours, it was like contact paper, it even had the backing like contact paper, so I guess you could
always buy a long enought length of contact paper and cut strips to the correct width.
The VW rubber strips were always expensive, the micro bus ones can be shortened to fit a Beetle bumper, but they would be expensive and hard to get as
well.
The Commodore strips might be OK, but the hard part is getting them stay put without having them look ugly.
