WANTED: Oval Door Hardware pre 55
Beerboy - February 1st, 2007 at 10:41 AM

I am looking for door hardware for a early 55 oval beetle.

i.e the one with the grooved doors. I need the handles, window winder door pulls. rubber bits, locks and catches

I think you get the idea. Any parts to make mine do longer just bare doors

whatnow - February 5th, 2007 at 07:54 PM

are the outside handles the same as late 50's bus icepicks?

Dasdubber - February 5th, 2007 at 08:07 PM

I found out yesterday that a later oval outside handle is not the same as my 54 (they are flat whereas the later ones have a ridge in the middle) - also the base is in a different position, different spring inside etc etc.

Good luck, I am just about to start my search for a passenger side outer door handle!

What sides, have many spares but want to keep some as they are getting hard to get.
Let me know and I will have a look at how many I have. I am talking internals.

Thanks for the replies. Not too worried about looking correct as thats not too much an issue. More a case of if it will fit.

looking for the bits that go inside the door, window lifter, door catches, I have the handles (i think) and the winder and door opener handles.

Not after the shinny bits more the bits inside the door that do the work. Not sure what they are called.

Grooved doors are different from later oval doors. Guess how I know.

are window lifters (mechanism)
same as later?

I do have a few spares i got wid da 56
measurements anyone?

Beerboy - February 6th, 2007 at 11:53 AM

I don't think so, anyone confirm?

Turbo54 - February 6th, 2007 at 07:56 PM

Only 54's and earlier fit ribbed doors. The chrome window channels are longer and cllunker door mechs are different. That is why complete ribbed doors are so expensive. I'll see how many spares I have got.

march 55 was the end of the grooved doors I think, hence I have an early 55.

thanks for the info, how good is those links, will have a proper look at those thanks

My turbo car is really a July 55 and has clunker doors and pillars. Think this is as late as they get.

I can't remember the exact month maybe mine is a march car. All I remember is it is a early 55, and bloody hard to find parts.

I have gone retro and put it on a 70's pan:o so effectively it will be a seventies beetle. :o pan has long gone

Got the body number still

anyne?

dvs_vw - February 23rd, 2007 at 11:00 AM

sorry to bring this back up and go abit off topic, but can someone tell me exactly what ribbed doors are...excuse my stupidity but I was looking on my 55 and can't see what would be the ditinguishing rib to make it a ribbed door?

dvs_vw - February 23rd, 2007 at 01:49 PM

i think I may have worked it out, is it the raised rib that runs around the whole of the door trim on the inside of the door, I noticed my 59 is flat and smooth where its painted and the 55 has a raised bump closer to the trim.

Turbo54 - February 23rd, 2007 at 02:15 PM

A+++ thats the ribs!
