LUCKY
I MAY HAVE DONE IT FOR $140 DEL
DID ALL NOTCH HAVE POPS
No not all notchback had pop-outs
I'm actually unsure as to which models had them and didnt, i assume pop-outs came on the "S" models but not on the "N" models
Possibly the same for Notch's but I have been reliably told that here in Australia the cut off was around 71. As my square is a late 72 I have been told that I wont have the cut outs in the pillars. Also some cars that didn't have them fitted but were the correct years are missing the strengthening in the pillars. Real great finding this out just after buying a set....oh well
DID ALL NOTCH HAVE POPS?
The early notches up to 1963 had popouts. After that, the only ones to have them were the German built 1500S. Any Australian built notches with
popouts have had them fitted by later owners. The holes are there for the hinges and latch but no hinges fitted and no nut plate for the latches.
These holes went all the way to 1971. You need to cut the hinges from any square to 1971 and fit them by welding/brazing them into the pillar. The
latch nut plate of suitable thickness can be easily screwed etc to the inner skin.

Haven't got any now as I gave all the latches to a Aaron in Adelaide after last nats. The ones off Squares are the same but left SB is the right
Notch. The hinges from a wrecked pre 64 or any square will do. All you have to do is cut the pillars above and below on the donor pillar and drill
the spot welds to get them free. They are a bit fiddly to get into place and care must be taken to avoid dropping them down the pillar. A piece of
thin copper wore helps here for holding. I found that it was easier to cut them and insert two separate bits. There are alignment holes to get
them in the right place. You may get away with using csk screws to hold the hinges in place rather than brazing. Worth trying to avoid burning the
paint!
The latch mount is easily made from 0.8 sheet with 4mm "nutserts" and screwed or popped into place.

are splitty ones ok??
The hinges are actually sheet metal tongues sticking out of the holes in the pillar. This connects with a similar reverse tongue on the popout frame.
No actual hinge pin. Not sure what's on splitty.

well looks like i'll have to have a new wanted ad to get these sections.
1500S you would'nt happen to have a picture of this would you? Is it possible to fab up your own or will i have to cut some out of a wreck?
Cheers, Muz
Muz. There must be plenty of squares around in non repairable condition. It's just tp get the owner/wrecker to consent to you cutting the upper
section out of that centre pillar. They could be made from sheet steel if you had a sample. I think I have plenty of 4 mm "nutserts" so I could
help you with the latch mount. Surely there is some hoarder out there with a set of hinges from a dead square!
