FSale: Excellent 76 Beetle Single Sideplate IRS Gearbox **SOLD**
Craig Torrens - October 2nd, 2007 at 10:31 PM
Item for Sale: 76 beetle single sideplate IRS gearbox.
The 76 Irs gearbox is one of the best to use for building a strong box. It has a single side plate case which also has an additional cast rib located
on the crown wheel side, the only factory case which has this. The additional external castings make this case a strong basis for a competition
gearbox.
I believe it also has stronger gears and steel shift forks etc.........which are added benefits. Fourth gear is also closer to third (So I'm told)
Dave???
Price: $390.
Euro_67 - October 3rd, 2007 at 05:49 AM
longer clutch arm too.
vw54 - October 3rd, 2007 at 06:56 AM
does it have the fine or course gears ??
dangerous - October 3rd, 2007 at 08:45 AM
Yes stock these had 3.875 diff ratio and 0.931 fine tooth 4th gear.(as opposed to 0.889)
Also the gears are furnace brazed so no need to weld any hubs.
Unless it is from a type 3 it should have the 3.875 diff.
It should have an AT code stamped on the lower rhs of the case.
About their only down side is a soft reverse idler that can lean over and cause popping out.

ideal for a splitty IRS conversion!
ghiaguy - October 31st, 2007 at 09:28 AM
Does anyone know whether this box will fit into a karmann ghia (if IRS converted)? I assume it would with the usual mods to the top of the forks etc.

yes! but you will need to convert to an 'early' style 2-bolt nose cone/selector rod housing to fit the chassis mount. 2 min job!

So what do you want to know ?
#1 It has the strongest factory case
#2 It's a single side plate box
#3 The sideplate that it has is the strongest factory plate (additional cast rib)
#4 Strongest factory diff (3.875)
#5 Lower 4th gear ratio (closer to third)
#6 Steel shift forks
#7 Gears are furnace brazed so no need to weld any hubs.
Gearbox has good syncos etc..............was briefly tested before the car wrecked.
waltermitty - December 17th, 2007 at 03:38 PM

The use of the word "excellent" in the title may give you a hint to the condition..................Shifts well, no noises, syncro's great even with
high speed down shifts from 3rd back to second and then back to first..............................Sale now pending.
waltermitty - December 17th, 2007 at 09:36 PM
"Excellent" hope the sale goes well , then sometimes even some "excellent " sales dont work as they should, good luck,
too hard for me
merry xmas mitty
