A 1200 is slow - November 24th, 2008 at 06:22 PM

Hi,

I have some of these solid rear gearbox mounts for sale. They are made out of 5mm aluminium and are suitable for stock height or 1" raised gearbox's. I can make them to suit 2",3"or more raised gearbox's too.
They only weigh 550 grams.
$ 60.00 + Postage

I also have some intermediate mounts in 3mm aluminium.
$20.00 + Postage

I am useing these in my 11 second beetle and the gearbox does not move at all.

I have now got solid front mounts for sale too. They are made from 3mm mild steel with high tensile bolts welded from behind and powdercoated, and like the rear mounts, the same mount can be used for std. height or 1" raised gearbox's. $35.00 + Postage

Hey Mark, what are the chances of a front and rear mount that keeps the trans at standard height but shifts it rearwards by 10-15mm ???

Yes, I can do this.... but why??

Sides - January 22nd, 2009 at 11:18 AM

Why is a bit of a long story, but basically I want a slight amount more clearance between the engine and firewall.

Options I could see are to either mod the firewall or to shift the trans and engine back slightly... since there's a lot of clearance between the rear tin and the apron, I figure coming backwards is the easier option.

Better cooling Sides? (ps, did you get my PM?)

Sides - January 22nd, 2009 at 02:06 PM

Yeah, it's kinda sorta cooling related.

I'm running a DTM shroud which uses the larger Type IV oil cooler - everything fits in JUST, but leaves naff all clearance to my firewall.

Everything's been fine the 6 months or so it's been that way, but just thought modded trans mounts might be a way of getting some clearance back.

oh btw Mick - no PM's from you, so I've PM'd you asking what your PM was about...

Carbies hitting engine lid?

those mounts look awesome, and very well priced. Later this year if all goes well ill definitely pick one up.

Yup, sure do. Well, I have a swinger that's been converted to IRS.

Why do you ask tho, does it make a difference somehow ???

I always thought the rear trans mount was the same across years other than for those odd looking later style (L bug ?) mounts...

matberry - January 22nd, 2009 at 10:10 PM

moving aft will put more weight bias to the rear which is not favourable especially for you roundy roundy cars, and may make engine remove/refit a pain. 2c worth

Sides - January 23rd, 2009 at 08:47 AM

Yeah Matt I'd thought about that, but since am only talking 10-15mm don't think it should be too much of an issue. Least I hope not... but if it is there's other weight saving/distributing stuff I can do to try and counter it.

(btw - apologies for sort-of hijacking the original thread)

I was just wondering how you were going to make you axles straight if you had a swing axle box.

My new mounts arrived today and wow!

Beautiful work, very easy to deal with and very quick turn around and postage.

A 1200 is slow - February 16th, 2009 at 07:51 PM

I'll be taking some of these mounts with me to Portland, so if you are interested in a set, or just want to have a look, come and see me..... Just look for the green beetle with the shiney trailer.
