I'd love to see a photo of one...

they were a great engine so I've read...

shame they were forced to stop making them...
[Ralph Nader - unsafe at any speed

I have never seen any info on them or even parts for sale in the USA...

Here you go,

Thanks for the photo...

the fan shroud and fan look good..

unusual drive for alternator...

what capacity were they??

You can see an occasional Corvair in Bewitched on Pay TV
plus lots of other Very Large cars....

[thats if they are outside..lol ]]

Imagine building an engine like that just to beat Volkswagen at their air cooled conquest... lol

yeah, noticed the ebay one, and it got me thinking. Anyone shipped anything from the US like an engine. What type of price and duty do you end up paying?

kb_ara - January 17th, 2009 at 08:08 PM

Can anyone confirm this.... corvair engines run anti clockwise!
and yes in the last month there have been a couple on evilbay australia...

MickH - January 17th, 2009 at 08:22 PM

Yeh they typically run "backwards" as you say...you can get a different cam that allows them to run the "right" way..

kombibob - January 17th, 2009 at 08:24 PM

yep they run backwards, the one in the photo was fitted with a reverse rotation cam to suit a vw.
capacity is around 2.7L
parts are readily available from clarks corvair in the states

Gday on the Corvair subject here's a little info that may help with corvair Vw conversions etc, I've got a few corvair motors myself and am going through the process

There is the proper way or the cheap way for conversion.

The proper way:

Yes they run counter clockwise from factory, you need to do more than just the get a cam for running motor in clockwise direction

You also need to get reverse rotation gears for the guts of the distributor.

You also need and adapter plate for motor to back of trans and , look at starter setup too

The cheap way:

Reverse the ring gear in the diff if its an not IRS rear

There are quite a few parts/motors lying round its just they don't pop up often

A bloke we know had custom panels in the 80's specailised in vw conversions, I tell you what their corvair bug did wheel stands and was bog stock!!!!!!!!!!
