Cheers, Greg
done sorry i missed last time i was looking
G,day Greg,
Spoke to Dad he says he remembers you from his hillclimb days.
About your diff i purchased mine from Bruce Tweddle in Canada, he is on the Samba site quite a bit so maybe that might be your contact point.
Mine is also a ZF, and it will change alot of your cars handling characteristics but when you get it right it,s awesome.
Just in the standing start at Ringwood the difference on average to the first timing marker (basically the start) was on average .40sec.
Increased my launching revs by over 1500rpm. Good luck with your search.
Cheers Col
Hi Col,
I remember Brian too - 'owyagoin Blue?
Thanks for the lead on the ZF, I'll chase up Mr Tweeddle.
Cheers, Greg

oh Db
i've spotted 2 or 3 for sale each year for the last 4 years
Maybe you're right dangerous, I should give up Beetles and learn to play the keyboard!!!!!
Cheers, Greg
Remembering that I know squat about the internals of gearboxes, but would this do the trick... I mean split case trans use the same diff, don't they
???

Swing-axle ZF's crop up on thesamba fairly often - back when I was after a good IRS one, there was 3 different swing axle ones on offer....
Perhap they are more common than I thought!
That early one wont fit, without some re-engineering.
The bearing size and bolt pattern are different for the ring gear.
I am sre there are some about, but unless you happen upon one that is unknown to the owner,
it will be a little costly.
I think paul Guard in the US was re making thm, but US$2400 is abit out of most people price range.
Way better/stronger than the original though!!

btw - billet diff body - noice !!!
Thanks fellas. That Guard unit looks snazzy, but I'd need to learn to play the key-board AND sing to afford that baby!
Might have to just keep lifting the old right foot a bit. HA HA
Cheers, Greg
has any one got contact details of Paul Guard ??

I saw one of these recently in person,
man they are woth every cent,
and way stronger than the old worn out ZF (with watch cogs inside).
Still hoping that something - reasonably affordable - will turn up one day.
Have you looked at quaife as an option i have seen them new for $1100 US
I don't like any of them, but ZF is my first choice. Quaife is touque-sesitive, and I am not sure that it would suit my car/driving style. Hopefully
a ZF will turn up, meanwhile, I will keep one eye on the tacho when exiting corners.
Has anyone had experience with the Phantom Grip diff locks? I see they now have a model to suit IRS vw boxes (aircooled).
If Phantom Grip made a swing-axle unit, I would probably give it a try - even though it looks a bit 'light-on'.
