WTB: Superbug Towbar. Prefer VIC
bnicho - April 6th, 2011 at 11:40 AM

Hi,

I'm still looking for a towbar so I can two my little trailer. Mus bolt onto a superbug. I think the ones for pre-68 bugs don't fit without mods.

Hoping for the tougher type that goes under the motor to the gearbox horns, but will accept the type that simply bolts onto the rear bar.

I'm located in Melbourne, but travelling to ACT and Wagga Wagga within the next month.

From my experience, the ones that go to the frame horns are the same for all models - only the strengthener in the rear bumper (which is a simple bolt-on piece) is different.

You can also get ones that go right foreward and clamp around the torsion tube - stronger again. This is what I now have on mine.

Thanks Jeff.

The two that reach the frame horns which I've found down here were welded together in one piece, even the tongue and bumper mounts. They only suited the early bumpers and would have required quite a bit of rework to make them fit my bug.

I could get a kit from the US, but shipping would be pricey.

Do you want me to get some photos tomorrow?

Some photos would be good Jeff, but whenever you get to it would be fine. No hurry.

Cheers,

OK, I have photos.

As you can see, I have had this towbar for many years, you can see where I have had new pieces welded to the bottom where it has worn away on the road - better than wearing away my exhaust.

You can also see on the back bumper where I back up to the trailer by 'braille'. lol I want to get a reversing camera, then a new bumper - one day.

Thanks Jeff, that's the type of setup I would like to have. I don't intend to tow anything more than about 400kg but I would prefer it to be over-engineered than under.

My Pathfinder has copped a couple of Braille marks from trailers too. They can stay there, as a new bumper skin is $1000. :grind:

Geez Jeff, that rear bumper is totalled

beetleboyjeff - April 8th, 2011 at 10:47 PM

It is the original one though.

A mate of mine got me a new one, but I don't want to fit it untill I get my built-in GPS with a reversing camera.

Great character bumper, totally unique and original!, leave it on, everyone has straight ones

Bumpage!

Have to pull the engine to change the clutch. It would be nice to fit the twobar while it's up in the air.

i can send you the pics if you are interested, I've been using it for some time now but only with a light trailer.

Hi, I have a bar that I removed from my 71 superbug if you are interested. It has all the required fittings including the wiring plug. If you have a way to pick it up from the Barossa Valley in SA, you are welcome to it.
It is the long type that clamps on to the torsion tube.
