WTB SA: Door handles/ignition barrel
SebastienPeek - July 13th, 2011 at 11:16 AM

Hey all!

I'm currently hunting a keyed to like set of door handles and ignition barrel. I should mention it is for a 73 L bug, I doubt the L means anything when it comes to handles, but I don't know about the ignition barrel though...

If anyone has anything of the sort, send me a PM or email me @ sebastien.peek@gmail.com!

I'm in SA, so obviously shipping will be at my own expense if I'm getting it from someone interstate!

I'm also after a matching decklid lock as well if possible.

Thanks!

YIKES.....

You will need a 1303 ignition switch....

the door handles will fit from any beetle from 1968-76

the engine lid lock will be a hard one...

Yours will be a one screw type... others were 3 screws...

but not a big drama fitting them...

BUT getting all the same key... You would have to be very lucky.... lol

You can change the tumblers in the door locks no problems...
so, ugly door handles with the same keys can still be used in Your handles...

From memory, I don't think You can change the tumblers in the engine lid lock...

I managed to get the two door handles with the one key so far... originally I had 4 keys... lol
down to 3 keys... lol

last year, I ended up getting two door tumblers and ignition lock switch [to fit a 68 beetle] from the USA all using the one key...
I haven't installed them as yet...

My Son just cut up a 69 beetle and I thought there would be matching key locks but the door handles were removed when He got the car... lol so only the ignition switch and key

I don;'t know why people do that...
when You think of all the beetles that have been wrecked or dismantled and yet no one keeps all the switches together..?

The engine lid lock is pretty easy to rekey.
Nearly all of them were dealer fitted options so very rare that the use the ignition/door key.

There is a grub screw in the base that releases the lock barrel.
It's almost identical to the Door ones.

I have a pair of door handles and a 1970 ignition barrel keyed alike, but I don't think that the ignition barrel will fit your car.

Lee,
Thanks for all that information! I'm curious as to how difficult it would be to take the decklid and ignition barrel to a locksmith and get them "converted" to use the same key as the door handles.

Joel,
Does that mean I could, in theory, if I had matching door handles and ignition barrel, I'd be able to go to a locksmith and he'd be able to rekey the decklid to fit with the ones I already have?

Mark,
They sure do sound very tasty. I will be sending you a PM very shortly in regards to the door handles! If I can get a pair of door handles that actually match first, then I can get the rest rekeyed to the correct key that fits the door handles. Easy, I hope...
