there should be heaps of used ones about...

Windscreen O"Brien may have new ones?

Mick Motors in Brisbane may have a used one... or New..

Buy a new windscreen seal as the old one will be hard as a rock and not flexible at all... so will leak...
mick motors will have them too..

Most people who have wrecked a VW would still have the glass..

Seriously buy a new windscreen for your own safety and that of others.

Old windscreens usually have a sandblasted surface from years of use. They look fine until you're driving into the sun in the early morning or late afternoon and then you can't see a damn thing.

Samantha - December 22nd, 2011 at 07:37 PM

Thanks for the advise. I think a new one is a good idea :)

grumble - December 22nd, 2011 at 07:38 PM

Thanks Lee,I forgot abut Micks motors, they carry a huge stock of parts and their prices and service are good,go with this or vwsteve but if you are stuck Taree is halfway up the NSW coast, freight would be the killer. Cheers Les

Hi Samantha
a new one will be laminated glass .. which is the same as in all new cars.. a stone will only chip the glass..

the old ones were safety glass which shatters into a million pieces

[even when Your head went thru it.. [ I know]

or if You were driving on the highway at 100 KMH and a stone hit it.... it shattered all over You....
not nice.... and blood trickled from Your forehead down Your face .. Yikes they were terrible...

probably why they aren't allowed any more....

hope You have seat belts in Your beetle...

Samantha - December 23rd, 2011 at 09:31 PM

Yep! I got seat belts :) Only in the front mind you. Yes the shattering happened when we took it out, i thought imagine if a stone hit it while driving, wouldn't be pretty. $180 that's a good price, where is that from?

h - December 24th, 2011 at 12:02 PM

erm by a 2nd handy like steve said $50 cheap as
as long as the glass is clean n clear it will work like a charm n do a new rubber whilst u are at it
too easy
why spend the cash when u it isn't really that necessary
:dork:

phatratpat - December 24th, 2011 at 01:43 PM

h - December 24th, 2011 at 01:54 PM

Samantha - December 24th, 2011 at 06:10 PM

Hey Pat. That sounds like a good offer. I dunno though about not having the safety glass  Looking forward to seeing you soon Pat

68AutoBug - December 24th, 2011 at 06:15 PM

all new windscreens are now laminated...

its the Law...

so, no more safety glass... in windscreens...
other windows usually are...

seat belts stop You hitting the windscreen anyway...

just make sure the 2nd hand one hasn't any scratches on it
from old wiper blades...

A new windscreen makes a world of difference over a 50 year old one. In my experience Widscreens O'Briens are not necessarily the best value however their service is very good. Suggest you shop around but you will need a new seal. $180 is probably a good price as I paid $150 for my '68 screen about 4 years ago. Not only is it clear when driving at night and into the sun, it is way clearer when it is raining. Wipers work so much better on a screen that is not sand blasted.
Cheers.....wayne

68AutoBug - December 25th, 2011 at 02:46 PM

those wipers can travel a looong way over 40++ years....

remember to tell them You want to buy a new glass windscreen

and NOT have it fitted...

is much cheaper....

and Yes, its just windscreen o'brien comes to mind...

I don't use them... lol

but they are professionals when it comes to fitting windscreens and rear windows too.. lol

New rubber seals also look good and do NOT leak...
