helbus - May 14th, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Can you get a kph speedo for a 1971 Beetle. A 1302S?

Calcool - May 15th, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Yes, but it will generally be from an Aussie 76 Beelte.

If it has the metal dash not the padded one ie 1303 L Bug style

Cheers,

David

I think I may have one if your bug has the metal dash.
Pm me with your phone number and I'll send you a pic when I get home

they were only in the 1976 Non Supers I believe Pete

which will fit in Your 1302S [flat metal dash]

Many which are sold in Australia originally come from Germany
as they used metric forever.. lol

I thought I had one but remember selling it.. on here..

they are about..

cheers

Lee and David, you need to brush up on your aussie VW history ;)

We swapped to KM/H over late 73.
You'll find KM/H speedos in all bugs after mid 73
The 73 on Pov spec aussie 1300 bugs had the flatscreen speedos in KM/H you're after, Always plenty on ebay but they have a different style face.

If you want to be nice and original you'd need a euro 140km/h speedo for a 71

Yes Joel, that is the speedo I am looking for. Original look.

Calcool - May 16th, 2012 at 09:09 AM

Thanks for the Brush Up Joel. I was aware of the standard 73 and 74 1300 Beeltes Speedo as they will be silver not black like the 76 I suggested, just thought they might be a little light on the ground as I have always hunted these models down and found them hard to come by for the swing axle gearboxes that are essentially L Bug/1303 internals. Seems people who bought these models on the cheap did not look after them and their attrition rate was much faster than the deluxe models. Similar with the nice coloured Beetles they never seem to survive it is always the Honey Browns you find parked under a tree or in a carport!

Good to see such a knowledge base on the forum, maybe we can catch up at Nambucca and learn from each other.

Cheers,

David

I was only taking the piss, parts swapping goes on so much after 40 years you never know what you get is original anymore.

The 1300s weren't a big seller from the beginning, most people went for S bugs and Lbugs for the bigger engine, better brakes and better suspension.
My old boss at the garage was head of the lismore dealership from the mid 60s, he reckons they only sold 1 1300 to every 5 or so Sbugs-Lbugs

71 was the last year of the old classic face and silver bezel, all the 72 onwards had the drab face and black bezel.
the 72-early 73 were mph and from mid 73 all flat screen 1300 and 76 had this speedo,
it's out of my 73 1300 bug.

They seem to come in waves on ebay, there will be a stack of late 160 km/h flat screen speedos then you may see a few of the earlier 140km/h euro speedos, although they are all from overseas so not as common.

Hi Joel

I will admit I know very little of Beetle history after 1972..
I had a 71 superbug and then went to a 1971 type 3 one owner squareback [variant] with low miles..
then went to Mitsubishi.. lol

I do however remember seeing a KMH speedo at the VW nationals or some other VW show in Sydney about 8-9 years ago..
the fellow wanted $200 for it..
He said how many of these have You seen for sale?
I said none...
He wouldn't lower His price and I didn't want to pay that much for one...

if I had a 140KMH speedo in Joel, I'd be forever trying to get to the Generator lamp...

I did have for a few months about 2004 [guess] a 1974 1300 beetle.. with a 1500 engine in it.. found heaps of rust on the rear ends of the rail gutters ..
I gave it to My Son to fix.. as I had poked big holes in the rust
.. to fix.. He sold it... lol..
I don't remember about the speedo..??

That speedo in the pic has the ATF lamp in it..
I made the first one and then bought a 160KMH one with ATF -reverse-heated window-fog- telltale lamps in it..

cheers
