Factory CB exhaust Question.
frog - October 24th, 2007 at 05:32 PM

Did CB come out with seperate twin baffle exhaust?
If so I may have some.

Frog,
The original CB exhausts were separate items and consisted of the muffler which was round andapprox 18 inches long, the header pipes ( short and stumpy with pre heater tube outlet and then the tailpipes which came out the rear openings. Yes- there were two separate systems but I am not sure of gow many baffles were in the mufflers.
Do you have a photo- I cam tell you very quickly.
Regards,
Countrybuggybill.

I have not seen pics of original CB exhausts, but from your description Bill, they might be very much like seperate exhausts on 1973 181's sold here in the States.
They too have some short stubby pipes with pre heater tube outlets located off the No. 2 & No. 4 cylinders.
As to the fitment issues relating to the differences in engine displacement between a CB and an 181, I am not able to comments on.
Maybe you could show of some pics of your own. I know you had a special batch of stainless systems fabricated.

For everyone's info, I chopped up an original one and there are two baffles inside each muffler barrel

Sorry I took so Long guys.
Here is a pic.
Covered in oil inside and out but would come up a treat sandblasted and painted.
Missing the other preheater end but if you don't have one it would not be too hard to make one from a beete heat exchange end.
Internal baffle is loose in one of them.
Some of you have pm'd me about selling them so should I go through the proper proceedure as of the rules of this forum as I initially asked only to be sure of what they were?.

These are the original CB mufflers without the tail pipes and one header pipe as described.
Good stuff. They are like rocking horse shit to find.

I would assume from the great pics (from frog), and the diagram from what appears to be a parts book (from cb john), these muffler were CB specific.
Is that right?
Were they unique part numbers shared with no other VW models?
If so, they probably more rare than the vehicles themselves given so many have been scraped and lost over time.
The CB parts books must be pretty rare birds too.
Anyone duplicating copies of these?

I am still interested in seeing pics of the stainless reproduction mufflers Bill commissioned some time back.
John, are you possibly considering tackling a muffler reproduction project when the time comes for you to address that issue after you have reproduced and fitted all the body panels you have been working on?

Regards,
Steve

p.s. I really got a chuckle from the term "rocking horse shit". That must be Aussie specific lingo .... ;-), but it really brought a smile to face!
