Deck Lid spring problem (weak).
Lateral - December 23rd, 2012 at 10:11 AM

Hi Guys

I have a '67 beetle with what seems like a very weak deck lid spring as it does not keep the lid open. It is a 2 piece spring that is probably a third party aftermarket. It looks as though it is fitted correctly.

I want to know if it is possible to fit an earlier single piece deck lid spring as I seem to remember these as being much stronger.

Thanks for your help

Regards
Greg

You need the one piece spring. The two piece is for '68 on

I would have thought that either one would have worked...?

as they are in the same place..

seems the late ones 68> must be in a slightly different place
if the deck comes down...

as they do really flip up the deck lids...

You can buy chromed ones too..

Is the spring fitted in the correct holes in the lid? It should have ends in the two holes nearest the top edge of the lid.

Yep, it is fitted to the holes nearest to the top edge....

has it always been weak, ??
or did you take it off lately ???

I have just purchased the car and from what I understand, the spring has always been "weak".

The car is the Liquid Blue 1967 that was completed by Stenguns in 2009 and I think the 2 piece spring is an afternarket chrome unit.

it may be put on wrong ??
as its two parts and it may need to be put on in a way to load spring .

I'll have a closer look next week to see if its been installed properly and let you know the outcome.

Hi guys

I decided to do away with the spring and install quick release hinge pins so that I can take the engine lid off easily.....,problem solved!
