Hi All,
Just curious if anyone knows of an insurance company that will insure a VW Beetle for approximately $9k that is in quite good condition with an
immaculant reconditioned engine.
I am currently insured with AAMI and they wont go over $5,000.
I rang Shannons and they refuse to insure cars that are parked primarily on the street.
I am at a loss here no insurance company wants my money.
I'm willing to pay slightly extra to be able to park on the street as I dont have off street options.
Its really annoying as most of my friends have cars worth well in excess of $30k and they have no issues getting insurance for on street parking.
Why wont a reputable insurance company take my money?
Try ringing the Insurance Council of Australia, they should be able to direct you to someone who will do it. Going through the same thing trying to get a trailer and contents insured.
It is difficult.
Shannon's use to want a locked garage and have recently changed to "off street".
I will be surprised of you find one.
One a side note. The fact that the motor is immaculate is irrelevant. It's is physical condition that they insure for.
Thanks guys. I will try Insurance Council of Australia.
So the primary reason I insured it was for if it got written off I wanted to be able to get it back to its current condition.
My main concern was if someone ever hit me while driving or if an accident occurred while driving it around. The chances of something occurring on
the street are pretty minimal (but possible) Its been parked on the street on and off for the last 10 years without any major incident.
If someone was to hit me or someone on the street was to hit me am I right that their insurance should or would pay me? Or would they just pay me the
minimum they can get away with?
This is a serious pain in the ass.
I'll let you all know what Insurance Council of Australia says.
Edit:
>>The fact that the motor is immaculate is irrelevant. It's is physical condition that they insure for.
I understand that however Shannons did say they would insure for that amount until they heard of was primarily on street.
Yep looks like you were right.
Spoke to the Insurance Council of Australia and they directed me to an insurance broker.
The broker made a few calls and said it was pretty much impossible to get agreed value on a car parked on the street.
So its either market value (which is ridiculously low) or park it off street and go with someone like Shannons.
So it looks like my flatmate will have to park on the street or we have to get the front garden dug out to accommodate a second car.
Not really happy with any of those options but I have no choice.

But along the same lines, my bug is insured through Shannons for $5k agreed value, it has a garaging address with off street parking, but I'm still
covered when I'm parked at the train station, out and about, whether I'm driving it or not. If I need to store stuff in my shed, the bug goes in the
driveway (hubcaps off so they don't walk) but there is no onus on me to inform the insurer of this. The car is just as easily stolen from your
driveway as it is from the street, in fact probably (if you look up the statistics) more likely to go from a driveway, public place etc.
So you tell them an address, say it is garaged there, they can't refuse to pay a claim if the car is stolen or wrecked or hit parked outside, if this
was the case none of us would drive our cars because once we leave the safety of the garage we're stuffed.
Do you have a friend, family etc that you could nominate as the garaging address, then just park outside your house as normal? I think as long as you
nominate an address and say its "off street" then they cannot refuse a claim if it is hit on the street outside that address.
whos to say it was always parked in a garage until that unfortunate day that it was hit the first time parked on the street...... my bug is insured for $18k agreed value.. the NRMA V&V. $450 a year. full comp
Park it is a garage!! Shannons, insures my '68 with an agreed value of $5500 for about $250...win!
I hate seeing threads like this. Car enthusiasts should have at least a single Garage (if not massive sheds full of stuff :P). It's the best thing
you can and ever will do for your car. Especially old ones.
