Does anyone out there know of any surviving Australian delivered Beetle Karmann Cabriolets from late 1963 / early 1964?
First hand account from original owner of one of them says that each state received one for promotional purposes. They were European 1964 models (ie
built after August 1963).
I asked the original owner if the car had been a special order but they said no, only purchased the car from the showroom floor after seeing it.
I read that they were only in the dealers in Melbourne and marketed in June.
Andrew Dodd had one about 10 years ago.
I know of one that was a 63 model that came from the vw dealer in brisbane, this was years ago when volkspares operated from Abbotsford road at Main, the guy who bought it off the origial owner was a mechanic at the dealership at Breakfast Creek, put a set of flaired guards on it and a set of wire wheels, i remember the car, it got stolen from under his house for the wheels and was found cut up and dumped in a creek a few months later, i have no idea what happened to it after that.
Interesting.
The car I know of is a Brisbane delivered car. It still has it's original registration from Dec 63.
I believe the June Melbourne cars were the 1961 batch.
I have no idea if this was ever welded back together.
