Mounting Retractable Seat Belts = 1970 VW bug
vinsueball - February 11th, 2014 at 05:38 PM

Hi All,
There's no doubt been discussion about this topic previously but I can't seem to locate anything specific for my bug. I have a 1970 Bug and am wanting to know if anybody has successfully managed to fit retrectable front seat belts in lieu of the old 3-pointers.
I'm in Qld and from reading other posts I believe that if I do any type of modifications to the anchor points they need to be inspected/ blue plated. Is there any other option that would stop the retracting mechanism from interfering with the support bar for the back seat and would stop the belt from rubbing up against the back seat upholstery ?

Happy to consider any options that may be available.

Cheers

The retracter mechanism should have an offset bracket so it clears the back seat. If it is an original style replacement belt. They bolt into all the original holes. You may find that you will have to buy the belts from a place that sells Beetle parts to get the right ones.

You need a bracket like this http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C26%2D857%2D024

I got my seat belts from Repco but try one of the suppliers on here to see if they have both the bracket and seat belt that you can buy together.

76 Beetles and some 75s actually had factory retractables using those mounts.

I bought Hemco from Vintage Vee Dub Supplies

Hi

I used Klippan brand seat belts from my local store. Its not hard to reproduce the brackets that CIP sell.

Appreciate your help folks. I'll go looking for the adapters. Interestingly the belts were purchased from a VW specialist who said that they should just bolt in ......I'll have a chat with them and see what they have.

Hey, hey,

An AussieVeedubbers member: psimitar, installed 3 point retractable belts in the front of his beetle.

Images and details of the installtion are contained in the thread about his car:

I found psimitar's how to "install retractables" information, very useful!

Oh yeah, you will need to scoll down to find the images of the installation.

I purchased retractables for my 70. They came with just straight flat brackets. They are not ideal but bolt straight up and down.
The only thing is you have to slightly move them to access back seat & do slightly rub on seat. The above brackets listed to seem alot better.
