Which Bentley Manual for Type 1 1970
mgiles - February 13th, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Hi All,

I have a 1970 1500SP Beetle.
For those of you on here with the same model, I am just wondering what Bentley manual you find applies best?

From what I can tell the 1970 here in Aus is much closer to the 68 & 69 US Models and as murphy's law would have it the red Bentley covers 1970 onwards and the blue ones goes up to 1969.

Being that the Bentley is US focused, would the blue one be more applicable to the 1970 in Aus?

Cheers,
Mark

Probably. Even so, US 1969 VWs got double-joint rear axles on the manuals, while the Australian CKD 1969 models kept the swing axles (only the semi-auto 1500 was double-joint here). The wiring loom will also be somewhat different. There will always be certain differences between US/Euro and Aussie VWs. But the Bentley will probably be fine for 99% of most work.

If you do get the Bentley manual, it might be a good idea to get the UK Haynes manual as well as a backup, and an Australian Gregory's/Scientific manual as well. Both are easy to find on Ebay.

Thanks Phil,
I have the Muir Book and the Scientific one but everyone seems to recommend having a Bentley.
I'll keep an eye out for the blue Bentley and UK Haynes too.

Have noticed wiring differs a tiny bit, no reverse light in mine for example and I think the 70 US also has the key in buzzer circuit, mine doesn't.
So I have a few versions of the wiring diagram from various sources... combined they seem to end up making sense

So far I have been lucky, haven't found any 'custom' fixes to the wiring from the PO.
