Keep it original or custom?
Jethro64 - March 9th, 2014 at 01:38 PM

Managed to come by a pretty original 64 beetle with a spun bearing in the original 1200.

Dilemma at the moment is what path to go down... original or custom. Nothing too fancy, just 2" lowered, whitewalls, a nice paint job (black, maybe 2 tone) and a bigger engine.

OR...

redo the original 1200 engine and paint standard etc.

I guess you have to build what you'll ultimately most enjoy (Custom of course ), but is there more resale value in doing back to original?

Are you building for you to enjoy or for the next owner to enjoy?

beetles are pretty common and are realistically worth about jack shit really ,, what did it cost you in fairly OG nick? not nuch i am guessing.
If you are building up or restoring anything reasonable be it beetle or a GTHO the money you spend will be the biggest concern not what its worth in the end, (roughly half of what you spend usually).
So just rip into it and make it yours, Mitchell

As above
Build it for you, not for what you think you will sell it for!!

yeah just do some mods to improve the driving and power and you will have a nice VW for about $20,000

As above but I would suggest painting it in a "saleable" colour

I don't get doing a half decent fit up only to find no one likes your choice of metal flake.
Mr VW chose lots of nice colours.

If you are going to keep it for ever then paint it what you like - but I doubt you are.

if it is an original matching numbers car then do it stock/original.

My opinion is likely to cause Anarchy

I think you have already answered your own question :D

You already said you want 2" narrow beam, lowered etc. You have already gone away from standard so I gather that is your preference, also these mods can always be put back to standard.

But think of it this way, if you do it standard you may get bored very quickly or if you modify it I'm sure by the sounds of your first post you will enjoy it a lot more.

As others said, do it how you want it to be and just enjoy.

Keep us updated, Kev

Thanks everyone for your comments. Preferred going a little bit custom, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be destroying value. The old mid sixties dubs do seem to be a dime a dozen.

Plan is to keep the chromies, possibly paint them, white walls, lowered just a smidge, and a nice 1775 to 1915 single port for reliability. Interior is still in good nick so will go back in as is for the time being.

Will start up a project thread soon with plenty of pics.

I'm enjoying making little mods to mine to make her more reliable mechanically, easier and more fun to drive (if that's even possible!?) ;) and also for a bit of piece of mind.
My SB had her roof chopped off in 2006 and little mods made here and there after that so not original and paint job is really bad so I knew I wasn't really doing any harm in the long run, I will probably keep her now anyway, bought cheap within the family so can spend a few bucks to make her smile again..and me! Ignition buggered up badly so key now just powers up and ignition button is on dash with new wiper controls..added an old motor from a mercedes benz to the old bottle, powered up and shot water up over the roof! small nozzle adjustment and wow! excellent result.
Here's the latest job..

You can only harm resale value, if you are going to resale it!
