Has anyone heard of or seen a genuine Volkswagen remanufactured engine case ?
Yep, as you said, remanufactured by VW
Do you know much about them ? for example if you order parts for the engine how do you know what to order. My bug is a 1200 and it has 77mm bores and
64 mm stroke. The barrels that I was supplied are for a 1200 but the barrels are too small for the engine case. I could only see 1 set of barrels
listed for a 1200.
Im now honing and re ringing my old barrels. I was just wondering if anyone might have come across the same problem
It sounds like you might have 36hp barrells, they were also 77mm.
The VW exchange engine is an engine reconditioned by Volkswagen. They are not available any more and probably haven't been for thirty odd years.
It's still the same size that it would have been prior to rebuild.
Not sure about why your 77mm barrels don't fit, some more details and pics is sure to help.
I think I have found the problem. I was looking on AA performances website and found that there is a late model European case that has 90mm bores in
the case and they make a special barrel to suit this case.
I guess being a VW remanufactured unit they must have used the later 1600 type case with the 1200 crank and different barrels. ( the barrels that were
sold to me were AA so I would assume my supplier would have their catalogue )
I'm a bit disappointed with the company that sold me the barrels. I have called him and left messages and emailed him to see if they had any idea
about the problem and I have had no reply.
The stupid part about it is that the fool would have got the sale of another set of barrels. I wouldn't have returned them because it was no fault of
his. Now he's lost a customer and he won't be recommended to any one by me.
Sorry about the rant. LOL
I wonder what shop that was.....
A good supplier will ask the right questions. Try Vintage Vee Dub Supplies if you want to get the best quality parts available first time
When Volkswagen Australia first determined there was a local demand for factory exchange engines in the late 1950s, they imported them from VW's
Kassel plant in Germany and made them available through Australian dealerships. In turn, non-working customer engines were then sent from the dealers
to Clayton, and shipped back over to Germany. This became well established by the early 1960s.
In 1964 when the Clayton plant was expanded to meet the 95% local content goal, VW built a 'non-ferrous' foundry and engine assembly shop at the
Clayton plant. Official factory exchange engines were then built in Melbourne, and no longer shipped back to Germany. However this practice ended in
1968, when local manufacture ended and the foundry/assembly shop were closed. Assembly of German CKD kits was again supplimented by importing German
exchange engines. These were available as genuine Volkswagen spare parts though the dealers. They were still listed in the parts catalogues and fiche
in the late 1970s, but their high prices by that time meant most customers went to independent VW workshops for their replacement engines - or to have
their existing engines rebuilt.
LNC Industries (which owned VW Australia after 1968), discontinued all VW passenger car sales in 1981, and lost the VW franchise entirely in 1987.

These are the Barrels that fit my engine case. At least I know what to order if I ever rebuild it again. They are also the same brand as the incorrect
parts I have. You would think the supplier would have their catalogue

I have a VW rebuilt case in my shed which will be the basis of my 1776. Bought a short block at the wreckers years ago and when I took it to have it
align bored and decked etc for the 1776, I was told it had been align bored a few times before, so I don't know whether I will get much of a life
out of it. It was in an early 70's Beetle and fitted with twin port heads. It also has a stamp on the case that says Redondo, so my case must have
had an interesting life. Reconditioned by VW, then a shop in the US before finding its way to a wreckers in Vic, then being reco'd again! At least it
will be well seasoned
Cheers......Wayne
