Hi guys.
I just got hold of a few beetles and want to get two of them running properly, third one is for spares. I got a 71, 72 and 75.
The wiring on the 75 is driving me nuts. I turn on the lights and it blows the 2nd on the right fuse in the pic. I turn on the hazards and it blows
the 5th from the left and I turn on ignition and it blows the first on the left. The car still starts and the lights still work but no indicators or
hazards. I have a test light and mutli meter but don't know where to start on this. I seem to get continuity on just about every thing (one lead to
steering colum and the other to the big red & white power lead 4th from the left.) Ive tried getting a wiring diagram from thesamba but cant seem
to find the right one.
Any tips greatly appreciated.
Cheers Max.
sounds like something to do with the indicator switch ? are you getting hi-low beam ? try here for a wiring diagram http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/index.html
With the battery disconnected you could test if any of your power/positive terminals/connections are earthing out, otherwise disconnect any components and try to test them working by reconnecting one by one
I'm getting high and low beam, checking the positive wires now for an earth. No earth's on the positives.
WIth the 2nd from the right blowing (thats #2 fuse) it will be in the RHS tail light or number plate light.
quite often the tab for the number plate light grounds on the housing inside, if you pop the light lense off you should see where or also the wires to
it rub through on the decklid or fanshroud.
The hazards and indicators run off seperate fuses so bulb problems blow both but a hazard switch problem wont blow the indicator fuse which is usually
#11.
If you have neither indicators or hazards check all the indicator connections, one may be back to front with the ground wire on the positive.
Thanks Joel.
I tested the two wires going to number plate light and have continuity, where do I do from there? It goes behind the shield in front of the motor.
Max if you post your location some helpful Dubber might be able to lend a hand
Im 600 k's east of Perth in Hopetoun. I think I might get a new wiring loom. Any ideas of the best place to get one?
Cheers Mx.

Hi Max,
It runs down behind the tarboard to the RHS of the engine bay and piggy backs off the RHS tail light power and ground.
Sometimes years of rubbing and vibration the metal tabs that hold the loom and tarboard on can wear through the wire insulation.
