Our 1971 Super Beetle has the brackets inside the front headlight buckets to allow the fitment of the later Kombi semi sealed headlights with H4 globes. The original was the 40/45W round bulb and non sealed headlight. The Kombi semi sealed beam allows for a 55/60W H4. The physical fitment is fine. I am just enquiring about whether we would need relays for the light circuits. The Kombi never had relays with it's 55/60W globes, however I have them fitted now, as it has 90/100W globes.
I have 140/100w globes in mine, and I have a relay on each light these days. Shit I can see well though
The difference between your OEM globes and the H4 on max power draw is only 1Amp or so.
Having said that I usually use a relay when drawing over 3A (36W) always anyway, especially on a long wire run or when using older wires.
One 30A changeover relay is easy to enough to whack in, and then your good to go no worries.
The relay will reduce the voltage drop and reduce the current flow through the switch,if the power to the relay is fed directly from the battery the difference in the lights will be very noticeable
Have been thinking of doing the same with our Notch. Would a normal relay for a spotlight set up suit with the switch wires re-connected to the 85/86 terminals or would it be better to set it up with 2 relays , one each for high and low beam?
Most of the relays available are 30amp and I use 1 relay per beam.
Buy some 7 inch Narva bases and a good quality H4 sealed beam, you don't need to use bulbs with excessive wattage, Phillips make really good globes in 55/60

but I'm not sure which one
Relays are definitely the go. Reduces the amps through the old headlight switch which is a good thing. Narva 72190 I reckon. Really worthwhile upgrade. You need to take the headlight rim off to adjust the lights but that is not a problem. I removed the original adjusting screws from the chrome rims and replaced them with countersunk stainless screws to fill the holes so they still look ok.
