hello all, just wondering, if for my next project i fix up a beetle, what are the cheaper models? i.e is a '56 just as cheap and easy/ difficult as a
'66 or '74. i know its a kinda stupid question but i just need a general idea.
Thanks all, Rowan
Depends on what you mean by fix up
Later 12V seem to be easier to get parts for. That is 68 onwards.
But you have to ask yourself. What do you want from this car?
What you want it for is an excellent question?
A daily driver and you will want to look for a disc brake beetle (mostly 68 onwardI think)
Best to get something relatively clean (rust free) and complete even if it is not quote the colour you like etc.
Once you have a solid base you can then build what you like more easily.
Rust is most troublesome and common in the junction between the heater channels and the door pillars.
What ever you get, just love the experience and the style of the classic beetle.
had a hankering it was a dud question.would be my daily driver, im now thinking superbug.i really was just curious about how the models differ, apart from the obvious? and are parts easy to come by for each model?bah im not thinking straight excuse the lack of sense
Nah... you are making sense mate.
Super beetles are generally cheaper to buy and restore
they also make the best daily drivers. More mod cons
Disc brakes, bigger motors, indicators, seat belts, 2 speed wipers, 12 volts etc etc
All post 68 beetles had thinner metal - so rust is the killer.
The earlier beetle parts are getting expensive.
The later ones you can get cheap new stuff.
example - new rear elehpant foot tail lights are $50 new complete.
A set of heart tail lights for a 54 oval will cost you $500 + restoration
OK.... street cred may be down but Supers make the best German Lookers
yeah i agree if your building a daily driver then go for a 68 to 71
wouldnt go for a strut bug 72 to 75 as they had a foam body deadener in the rear pillars and this created heaps of rust which means lots of body
work in rust repairs
Ok thanks guys, think u just made my mind up:thumb....Now i just gotta find one, Cheers
Good point with the strut beetles VW54. 68-71 is the go for what you want.
unless you get one thats been repaired before you got it
