Does anyone know anything about trip metres in beetle speedos. I was having a scrap steel clean up at home the other day and found a speedo in a 62
bug that has a trip metre in it. I have never seen one before and couldnt find any info about it. I'd attach a picture only I'm not real good with
computers.
So if anyone knows anything let us know
what is it you wanted to know?
What is it out of? Is it an optional extra? Are there many around?
dunno, dunno, pobably not
someone wanted one on here a while ago, and there was a link to e-bay or teh sambe with one in the states for many $100s
there was an oval speedo with tripmeter on Ebay a few months back, it went for $500 or so, must have been an option albiet very rarely fitted
not sure what year they started to put the trip meter in the speedos. could've been an option after a certain year. or it may be a late speedo
installed in the early bug.
I have a trip meter in my 57 oval beetle.. but dont know what year the speedo is from. its in mph.
does the back of the speedo have a date on it?
Nah No date stamped on the back and it is in miles.
There is the remnance of an iledgible paper sticker and also what looks like an ink part number stamped on the metal.
I was just suprised when I saw it because I have never seen one before at all.
does the top speed read 80 or 90mph ???
It is a 90 Mile an hour speedo. I didnt know that VW made an 80 Mile an hour speedo. What are they from?
the 80s are for cars up to 62 fitted with the 36hp engine
the 90mph are for the bigger later 40hp engine
does it look like this
Yes they were an optional extra...
and not many sold in Australia...
I would say Very Rare....
any year....
I've seen pics of beetles in Europe in the 50s and 60s with them...

Looks just like that only not as shiney.
Sounds like I have had a good find. I bought the bug and a datsun powered beach buggy for $300.00 about 18 months back.
