nice orginal bug
those are gemini seats
alot of ppl put them in 71 and earlier bugs cos there a good size, and cheap and easy to get
ur bug would have low back seats originally
so unless u want a perfect authentic resto id stick with highbacks there alot safer if u get rear ended
it would only have a drivers mirror originally

happy dubbing

bd-850 - April 19th, 2008 at 07:08 PM

Thanks Joel. What style mirror, the once on are useless you cant see out of them

pod - April 19th, 2008 at 07:14 PM

look on Classic Veedubs web site as og style mirrors are cheap as to buy and George ships at a good price:tu:

bd-850 - April 19th, 2008 at 07:34 PM

does anyone know of a place where i can get the mat that goes in the luggage compartment

Joel - April 20th, 2008 at 09:38 AM

if u get the replacement mirrors the only thing u have to watch is they rust pretty easy especially on cars that live outside
ive got the original one from my 71 super somewhere still, there a tiny bit different cosmetically to the replacement ones

afaik no one reproduces the trunk cardboard matts
but i know someone who was looking into a black plastic like house forsale signs are made off to make new ones
they never lasted long, they fell apart when wet and tore with jacks and tools bouncing around on them
i prefer to carpet looks alot cleaner imo and helps a tiny bit with sound deadning

bd-850 - April 20th, 2008 at 03:36 PM

Thanks for all the help DUB74L, you will prob get sick of me asking a heap of stupid questions.

Sorry bout the quality of the pic but in the red circle is that where the mirror mounts to?

bd-850 - April 20th, 2008 at 04:42 PM

Will these fit my car?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=11...

Joel - April 20th, 2008 at 04:47 PM

this is a car forum, theres no such thing as a stupid question

thats the remains of the original mirror base in the pic yeah
those look like early escort mirrors that someone has fitted to it

heres an original mirror off one of my bugs
u can see which part is still in ur door

there would be a bit of work to fit those ebay ones
u would need to drive out the hinge pins and fit the right ones with mirror mounts
theyre actually designed for early 6volt beetles

-Joel

bd-850 - April 20th, 2008 at 04:58 PM

thanks, they have the pins with the mirrors but do thay have a diffrent size pin or anything? i just like that style mirror better.

pod - April 20th, 2008 at 06:35 PM

the mirrors on his car look like early k-mart and were horrible things that moved with each truck that came by you on the highway, early escort were the same as the falcon and cortina mirror with a different packer under the base for the shape of the car:yes:

bd-850 - April 20th, 2008 at 07:36 PM

Either way they are going coz they are crap.

h - April 20th, 2008 at 07:41 PM

hey nice looking ride..
pls oh pls get rid of the fuel filter thats next to your motor
= bad and fire will happen some day..
they get brittle with age and crack then fuel all over hot motor = RIP beetle..

ctefeh - April 21st, 2008 at 07:33 PM

Bd,
Where does that vacuum advance off your distributor go to? Shouldn't go where it appears to. There should be a spigot on the left hand side of your carb (looking at it as in your picture) for the hose. Also get something that has an up 'n' down loop so fuel doesn't make it's way to the canister.

To find out what distributor you have go to http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm  after you read off all the numbers on that distributor.

Joel - April 22nd, 2008 at 10:55 AM

well spotted ctefeh, i missed that LOL
looks like some clever idiot has put on a replacement or semi auto carb and hooked it to the retard port for US models/semi auto vac line

u need to pull it off and plug that port on the carb and hook to the right one like this:

bd-850 - April 22nd, 2008 at 05:53 PM

Thanks guys fixed it now.

Does anyone know where i can get new headlight buckets from?

VeeRod - April 25th, 2008 at 09:59 AM

If you want to retain a Left hand side mirror, VW actually welded a big washer where the mirror would go inside of the outer door skin.
The washer/mounting point (no nut tho) is situated in relation to where the Right Mirror is mounted in the door so just measure and drill.
You'll need a large nut to secure the new mirror from the inside. I'd stick with the the original type Beetle mirrors as they look ok and offer a reasonable rear view.
I've just fitted a LH mirror and it takes the guesswork out of lane changes even tho I still do head checks.

Good Luck and nice clean Bug you have. Let the Farkles begin:crazy:

Joel - April 25th, 2008 at 09:05 PM

u should be able to get new reflectors from any of the main vw suppliers vforce, vvds, classicvw, micks etc

i found the original german mirror off my 71 super if ur interested
with the original chrome style left ones i found theyre pretty useless
all the ones u can get are actually drivers side ones off LHD drive rather than passenger side for RHD
all it means is the arm is shorter so its closer to the body which on the left side makes about half of the mirror useless unless ur 6ft tall with ur head touchign the roof

i replaced my chrome ones with the black plastic style when i germanlooked my bug
they look nice but theyre shit vision wise for the same reason - to close to the body

1303Steve - April 25th, 2008 at 09:38 PM

Hi

Nice car, honey brown is not my favourite VW. The 71 1600 bugs had a dual vacuum advance dizzy, that's why your carb has a vacuum port facing out the back of the car.

I met some people involved with the vintage car movement out you many years ago and I cant remember their name, they had an early bug.

Steve

bd-850 - April 27th, 2008 at 05:55 PM

Steve, yeah i agree honey brown isnt the best of colours, thats why im gona two tome it just to spruce it up a bit. as far as i know there have onle been 3-4 beetles in the club, this one (3rd member to own it) a red one and w white one (that lives in sydney i think)

bd-850 - April 27th, 2008 at 06:33 PM

Just a photo from the club run we had today to the Ironfest

bigdave - April 27th, 2008 at 07:25 PM

I see you also have the usual vw engine oil leaks!

Taz Devil - April 28th, 2008 at 05:59 PM

BD

As H said pls, pls, pls move that fuel filter. The easiest way I found was to buy new fuel hose and run it so that the fuel filter sits in one of the rear wheel arches. Very easy to access when you need to change it.

Otherwise nice looking car.....

Cheers

Adam

bd-850 - April 29th, 2008 at 07:52 PM

prob will move the filter when i give a new lick of paint.
