Folks,
I have a 62 Beetle that I'm going to give a little bit of love, in the form of Disc Brakes. What I am looking for is a little advice on the pitfalls
of doing this with the kits from anyone that has done it on a fairly early Bug.
Should I be thinking about switching to type 3 drums on the rear .... is there a cheaper option than buying the kits from people such as VVWS.
At this point I am thinking that I will stay with the original stud pattern - cause my wheels are ok. Equally I suppose I am open to any ideas people
have about what else I should consider doing given I am going to have the car up and up to my arms in it.
cheers

Hi
A few people on here have given glowing reviews on the kit from Vintage Vee Dub supplies, do a search, I'm sure you will find their posts.

what i would like to know is if there is any way of running a vacuum assisted booster?
Hi
You can do it, but they are not needed, if you have shit brakes a booster wont help, it will only make them easier to apply.
Steve
which is kinda what i want, mine brakes fine would just like to make it that tiny bit nicer to drive
If you want to go all out, VWcool has awesome sets for sale.

Do you want to keep the wide 5 bolt patterm of the 62 or would you go to 4 bolt??
Steve is right if your brakes are stuffed a booster won't help. But if you have good hydraulics, hoses and shoes a VH44 booster will fit under the L/H/F on the opposite side to the master cylinder,a vacuum line can be run under the car in the floor pan recess and then its a small matter of a couple of hydraulic lines and a good bleed. I have used this system on several bugs over the years with great success. Les
could you send me through some pics so i make sure i get how u have done it down pat?
I'm a bit torn about the pattern. Seems to me that for the price of front disks and a new set of Mags ( Say EMPI ) I could get a front and rear
disks in a holden / ford pattern. Then I could pretty easily pick up a set of mags of Ebay and have not spent much more but have greater overall
braking and better options going forward.
Thoughts ??
For example I could get a set like this..

Ok Size / Offset etc etc
offset will be your downfall doing it that way..........
i've always thought there are plenty of nice mags for BMW's tho
thats the way im thinking of going as well to do the brake convert but then its a matter of squaring away the offset issues
.. good luck with that!
Hi Guys
What is a VH44 booster out of?
Cheers

If memory serves, our old HR Holden Premier had a VH44 setup as standard.

You also need to be REAL carefull about the centre hole
VWs have a need for a real big hole - if ya get my drift
The centreing ring on the fronts and the large nuts on the rear may mean a bore job on the cheap wheels
Nothing is easy - sigh
the stuff off the older cars should accomadate this problem though shouldnt it? they used to have larger hub centre holes and had the larger offsets as well, the 5 spoke rims the hq racers are running would be worth a look
The VH44 is an aftermarket booster which is fairly compact. We used to fit a lot of them to land rovers, holdens or anything that came with drum or disc brakes that just needed a bit of assistance. The unit on the HR and X2 was a different unit (what we in the trade called a mongrel set up) ,although some were fitted with the VH44 at dealerships. I will try to post a couple of pics but not quite sure on procedure Regards Les
here you go guys
