beetleproject1970 - November 29th, 2008 at 03:54 PM

what reinforcement is advised to be able to chop the top off a beetle

Go and see one of the engineers certified by the RTA who will give you all the information you need, explain to him what you intend to do and he will advise. Then follow up with him keeping him informed with photos etc, this will make it very easy when you eventually go to get it registered.

full roll cage with stainless steel pipe that goes up and down and around like crazy

or or... get a pipe reinforce in the door and weld the door shut...
you won't have a roof so u could get in that way

the car won't be legal tho haha

Firstly, cut a hole in the roof about 80cms by 80cms

then You will see that a lot of strength in a beetle comes from the Roof....

You would need to re-inforce the floor/chassis before cutting the roof off..
otherwise the doors won't probably open..

and if they do... You'll never get them shut
as the chassis will bend without the supporting roof...

this is why a Karmann beetle Cabriolet is much heavier than a beetle with a roof...
a lot of extra support in the chassis and body...

PS: Why do You want to cut the roof off ????

Joel - November 30th, 2008 at 09:17 AM

exactly...

if u want a soft top buy one already hacked
enough beetles were sacraficed already

talk to ppl that have owned one b4 u take the plunge
the fun of crusing topless in the summer for a few months dont outweigh all the down sides to them

theres a good reason my old one is probably the bonnet of a VE commodore now

68AutoBug - November 30th, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Yes,
You very rarely see these topless beetles being driven with the top Down...

and the top must be custom made...

You can find these topless beetles being sold all the time..

No one wants them... after a few weeks.... lol

Fair call, save a little more $$$ and buy the real thing. The are way too many hack jobs out there.

grumble - November 30th, 2008 at 08:13 PM

I might give you a commission if you sell it barls. You could save me a lot of time to do other things such as ---your wheels etc

DONT TOUCH IT! Iv got one and its cheaper to find a real convertible than spend the money for a custom cover made that will be sufficiently waterproof

What do you mean yours is probally
"the bonnet on a Commodore"
there is enough metal in a beetle to make a fleet of commodore taxis big enough to service Sydney metro

colonel mustard - April 5th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
