has any one done an engine and trans swap from L beetle to a type 1 1962 sedan ? if so is there any modification required to fit he later 1600 twin port and trans. The code on the motor is AD cheers, max
the only thing I know is the gearbox and rear suspension on an L beetle is IRS with CV Joints...
the 1962 beetle had swing rear axles ..
so they are NOT interchangeable...
Many beetles - all years - have 1600 engines fitted...
You could just bolt in the 1600 engine...
but the 12 volt clutch is 200mm where as the 6 volt clutch is 180mm
this has been done many times....

most ppl just machine the old 6v flywheels to bolt upto the 1600 engine
saves frigging around changing clutches, starters, clearance bellhousing etc
I have the trans and engine just wondering if it's a straight forward swap ie bolt in etc
no its not unfortunately, the rear suspension is very different so the gearbox wont go straight in. it requires a conversion
has anyone attempted this, is it event worth it or should I be looking at modifying the flywheel and starter to match the old gear box? any suggestions ?
It is easier to change the pans over
But a L bug pan wont fit a 62
you need a converted 69 semi auto pan or a 1976 pan
The L bug has an IRS gear box and the 62 a swing axle
2 entirley different thiings
