Super Beetle vs Beetle (custom)
e-square12 - April 20th, 2009 at 06:12 AM

The VW Beetle is my favorite car and I'd been trying to buy one for many years. Unfortunately, the super beetle is easier to find in my country than the custom model. My father says that the super beetle's MacPherson strut suspension is not a good idea since it is attached to the body. In case of an accident, it would be harder to fix. I would like to know if this is true.

Also, I would like to know exactly how is the relationship between the front glass shape and the year/model of the beetle. Is there anyway to easily identify the car without looking at the suspension?

which country are you in exactly?
its not going to matter whether its a superbug or a standard in an accident as neither hold up real well

superbeetles have a much better ride and unless your in the US they also have better brakes, IRS and bigger engine

The front bonnett is flatter and wider at the bottom to make room for the spare tyre to lay flat. A curved windscreen is also on the 1303 (also known as L bug) which makes it easy to see. They also have the big round "elephants foot" tail lights. You can also get a super beetle with the flat windscreen which is a model 1302 (also known as an S bug). They have the tombstone style tail lights and vents around the rear of the side windows at the back of the car. The headlights are more upright than the earlier standard beetle but some later models also came in standard model with the upright lights.

The easiest way though is to look at the bottom of the bonnet and see if it is wide and flat. A super drives more comfortably and isn't as affected by winds etc. As Joel said, if you crash either, there will be lots of work and I don't think one is easier than the other to repair.
