h4 halogen headlight conversion
tomfreo333 - June 7th, 2009 at 11:41 AM

I have a '64 6V bug. The headlights are dim even with all the connections checked and cleaned. I'm thinking a h4 halogen headlight conversion and wiring relay might be the answer.

My question is, does anyone know where I might be able to source a headlight replacement and 6V relay suitable for the headlights from here in Western Australia?

TIA

i reckon you would need to upgrade to 12v, as i haven't heard of 6v h4 bulbs, but i could be wrong (and a quick google looks like i am ;) )

I've tracked down 6V halogen bulbs at http://classicandvintagebulbs.com/  (based in S.Australia). Found a supplier of 6V headlight relays at http://www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com/parts/parts_counter_2.html.  Now I only need to find a supplier for H4 headlight (conversion kits I think they're called). It would be good to be able to find a supplier of 6V headlight relays in Oz as well to cut down on shipping costs.

Got the catalogue from http://classicandvintagebulbs.com/  - in it are 6V headlight relays. Now, does anyone know of anywhere in Australia where I can get my hands on an H4 'conversion' kit (I believe it's a simple reflector/glass replacement). Whether or not I really need a replacement is another matter!

Why not fit a pair of Rossi lights with halogen globes, the globes have been available over the years and I think Classic and Vintage most likely still stock them. Run a new 6mm cable from the battery to the headlight relay and you will be surprised.(this will eliminate almost all of the voltage drop through the various connections )This has worked well for me over the years.
