DylanTheDubber - June 8th, 2009 at 08:21 PM

Hi everyone,

Dose anyone have a standard bug 1973 onwards it should have the standard suspension (not macpearson strut) and L bug rear lights and chassis number should start with 11 then if its a 1973 it will go 113------- or 1974 it will go 114-------

I was just woundering if any one did because i like this type of bug alot but i dont see them for sale that often. I want one for my first car either that or L bug or a early 60s bug.

I have one too with drum brakes in front, thinking converting to disk later on

dose the 73 onwards standard have drums up front aswell as at back. I thorght the front end was similar to a 1500 bug.

Hi Dylan

That model bug were the poverty pack model, they were brought out to combat the Japanese invasion.

So they had 4 wheel drum brakes, swing axle rear end and a 1300cc twin port motor and a low ratio transmission.

The front brakes an motor are easily upgradable.

Steve,
Hi thanks for the info. So what gear box would you recomend to wack in these things with a performance motor in it. what about an L bug box.

trickysimon - June 9th, 2009 at 12:30 PM

Standards are swingaxle so no, you can't put a L bug box in. You can put a 1500 box in if you don't like the short gears.
I love short gearing though. Makes you think you have more power

DylanTheDubber - June 9th, 2009 at 02:10 PM

so revs higher quicker.

DylanTheDubber - June 9th, 2009 at 02:11 PM

so it wont last long in each gear. But what would it be like in top gear.

you should go get yourself a heavy vehicle licence

the 73 on bugs u can fit a 1500 box to if u change the nose cone over
you can probably stick a swinger diff in an a Sbug box cos there double side plate but not Lbug
mr butler will know if thats possible

it was a joke at simon, sounds like he should be driving a truck

trickysimon - June 9th, 2009 at 06:55 PM

Pffft tall gears are for big lazy diesels. My car accelerates quicker than the old automatic VN commodore in 1st and 2nd.
To say it dies in 3rd and 4th would be an understatement though
Still wouldn't mind a taller 4th so its not revving its tits off on the highway.

DylanTheDubber - June 9th, 2009 at 08:18 PM

look i like the sound of your style gear box, But sound like i would be better off getting a 1500 bug say a 69-72 and put in a 1300 box and L bug gaurds to make it a look a like 73 - standard 1300 bug.

DylanTheDubber - June 9th, 2009 at 08:19 PM

what do you think simon and joel.

Joel - June 9th, 2009 at 08:45 PM

think ur doing some chronic post whoring there young dylan

theres no reason to put in a 1300 box
as i doubt you'd be running a 1300 engine its a complete downgrade
a 1600 or bigger is only gonna run hot on the highway cos the revs are up abit, not majorly but something to think about, these engines dont need any reasons to run hotter than they already do
i take it you like elephants feet tail lights?

DylanTheDubber - June 9th, 2009 at 08:48 PM

Yes, Sorry im maddly posting but im a bit board and had nothing to do but also to get some advise. Yes i like the standard 1500 look and also elephants foot tail lights.

have a 74 standard that we picked up a few years ago and has since had a complete rebuild.
detailed thread can be found here..... http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=51542
basically it was an ok car when we got her... had some front end damage that hadn't been repaired correctly but other than that it was pretty rust free in the usual spots.
had drums on rear and discs on front.. 1300 motor.
we changed to discs on rear and upgraded motor with a p&b kit to 1640cc.
BRM mags and lowered.
they are around but it may take a while to track one down. took us 6 months to find this one.
