Question pre '68 pedal cluster LHD / RHD
motorbikerx - July 28th, 2009 at 02:21 PM

Whats the differences please, are all the floorpans stamped the same as Germany is LHD.?
Or would there be diffent floorpan stampings depwending on where the bug was destined to go to ?
Please enlighten me.

I am fairly certain there is no difference between a LHD and RHD pan.
I've sectioned a few RHD pans and the guys in the USA have confirmed they are the same, although no one
else has cut one up to prove it. Check out the pics on my web site.

There is of course, a big difference in the pedal cluster.

I have converted a pre 68 pan to LHD and it was a fair amount of work.I had to cut open the tunnel to shift the clutch tube across to the LHS-the metal bracket to hold the tube is there already-looks they only made the one bracket.I had to cut the depression that is in the floor under the pedals, from a later pan and weld it in.This part of the flloor also has the 2 dimples to locate the small plate for the pedal backstops.

Yes, I believe all the chassis were made the same...
the stampings would be identical...
even the Australian made ones should be the same..

the original chassis were designed for LHD....
that is why the accelerator cable is on the LHS..

the pedal assembly is entirely different...
they have much shorter bushes on the shafts and do wear out... where the RHD pedals have longer bushes and don't usually need replacing...

You would have to find a LHD set of pedals...
which is going to be difficult unless You can find a LHD beetle/karmann ghia etc of some kind rusted out...
or import from the USA...

that Country Buggy is LHD...

If its in Australia ????

and if its going to be RHD You could get the LHD pedals..

I have no idea where its located????

Thanks for the valuable info and if theres any more please keep it coming.
I'm really asking for a mate of mine in USA who has a RHD pre '68 bug that he is restoring that he needs a pedal cluster for(and anything else you can think of he may need).
I'm pretty sure I've sourced him a pedal cluster thru this fantastic site and if anyone is chasing something LHD I'm sure he could help there.
My suspicions of a universal floorpan pressing seem to be correct then,
Thank You,from both of us.
PS if theres anything else you can think of we may need to know please dont hesitate to say.

Hi

Be careful with pre 68 models, ours differed from the rest of the world, our 67 and earlier Beetles were essentially the same pedal cluster wise after the roller accelerator pedal was dropped, were as the rest of world really changed after 65.

The pans differed between RHD & LHD in mounting point for the pedals and of course the hole for the master cylinder.
