Main Oil Seal or flywheel replacement-ASAP
jjwebb123 - January 26th, 2010 at 08:23 AM

Hey Guys.HaPPY Australia

Just below the fylwheel area we have a slow leak, now our first thoughts was that it was the rear Main Oil Seal and replacing that should fix the problem. But when stumbling the net we saw something mention a flywheel seal. Will we be needing both or is it for different things.
Would be great to hear from you soon.

you ill need the rear main seal which is in the case behind the flywheel, and the o-ring which is in the back of the flywheel where it connects to the crank  And whilst you have the motor out you might as well change the gearbox output shaft seal..

there's also the aluminium or paper gasket that sit on the end of the crank with the dowel pins.
note: you'll need 36mm socket on a breaker bar to take the flywheel off and torque it up to 230 lbs or so depend on the model
cheers

This is an important point if you haven't done one. I tried a 36mm socket on an SP Air rattle gun and couldn't loosen a flywheel with it! The compressor was the limiting factor though. The bottom line is, those flywheel nuts are enormous, and very tight. Leverage is your friend!

we have a bar made up ready for that leverage ,don't currently have that size socket getting one soon.

supposed i know a guy who put one in on a
68 ish 1600 tp from a type 3 engine
( ENG code :TO said to be 1500 but found 85.5 with .75 conrod bearing and .50 crank bearing so it must have had a rebuilt at some point)

should this guy be worried?

jjwebb123

when u have the flywheel off make sure you check to see if the rear main bearing isnt moving back n forth in the case

if it does move when u push back n forth on the crank then the thrust faces on the bearing have gone and this will cause your new oil seal to leak no matter what you do time for a engine rebuild

thanks for that,i will keep it in mind.i have the sockets now just waiting on the seal.
