Anyone else had problems with poor quality repo parts
Camo - February 13th, 2010 at 04:59 PM

Check out these pop out windows I bought and what I think is a below standard quality for reproduction parts. I am not trying to bad mouth my supplier, just the parts that are coming into our country. First 2 photos are for a comparison from the original correct shape to reproduction shape (or lack of).

I gather from these photos you will tell the difference and the problem. The last photo is just showing my original window and rubber in place indicating that its not a car body problem.

If it makes ya feel better my VW ones had a gap in one window.

But..........................

There is a REAL problem where, i guess, we the customer, have driven the price right down - and we are being given rubbish.
Sadly - we are buying it

So what is the problem with the OG ones??
Why cant you use them??

Hi
Mine are original VW.... used

but I haven't even tried to fit them as i received the incorrect rubbers from the USA...

I didn't know You could buy NEW pop outs...

Made in USA parts are usually good... [warranty in the USA]

made in Taiwan-China-Brasil-Mexico....
well lets not go there... lol

as they must have had a real odd looking beetle to measure their parts to fit... lol

I don't think the cost of parts has any bearing on it...
it costs the same to make a part to fit or NOt to fit...

quality may be different...??

but the parts should be identical...
otherwise... why make them...

that's probably why We don't all know of a good brasillian brand of VW parts...

as no one stands behind their parts and label them in a LARGE FONT....

WE keep getting parts made by who knows where/what??

I have great heavy duty Brasillian running boards... OK
but I cannot tell anyone what brand they are....
as i don't know....

You can buy a part from most VW parts suppliers
and sometimes the part is excellent... fits great etc...
so, You order another one from the same shop...
and whammo.... You get a crappy one...
same price and part number.... ???

make life for Us restorers a nightmare....

LEE

IMHO....

They aren't pop outs !!!!!

I also saw your thread and the similar gap. The top edge from the 'B' backwards is meant to have a curve in it, but the aftermarket ones are a flat squarer edge.

Yes they are the smaller ones for a 61 model and rang the shop to inquire if they had other complaints re these. Obviously was told, No.

and now I have no idea where I bougt what... lol

cheers

PS: I know that doesn't help Kev....

68AutoBug - February 14th, 2010 at 04:15 PM

Kev

watch out for engine pulleys..

alloy crankshaft?? or steel generator/alternator pulleys...

the steel alternator ones - the welding is for looks only... lol
also need shim of some kind between alternator and steel pulleys...

the alloy ones... need a shim so they are aligned properly..
or don't bind up to the engine case...??

LEE

PS" Aftermarket tinware is really bad...
chromed or black.... doesn't fit.... LEE

Depends on what you buy, certainly most is crap, but I find the Scat tin pretty good, vw best of course. :)

Camo - February 14th, 2010 at 06:15 PM

Shit, I think I am going to have to go back to a fully stock original Beetle with all original VW parts just so I dont have problems with aftermarket parts. Do these cars still exist.

I never had this trouble with aftermarket parts for Jap cars. Maybe I need to go back to my 2.5L, twin cam, twin turbo and converted to manual Toyota Cressida. I should never have sold this car :sniffle:

68AutoBug - February 14th, 2010 at 08:27 PM

Hi Kev

Yes, the Cressida was maybe the best Toyota sold in Australia...

I have heard terrible things about SCAT parts...
but don't know offhand....

can't be as bad as EMPI usa [Mr BUG] made in taiwan...

look as good as... shame really...

I think if it has a BRAND name on the part...
You are probably OK....
although VW Mexico or VW do Brasil made parts can be crap too....

LEE

Joel - February 14th, 2010 at 08:43 PM

Kev, i was gonna say way way way off topic but was that a toyota key in the first pics?

guess your last pics explains that lol

i've owned way to many of them things

Kuchster - February 14th, 2010 at 08:56 PM

Just changed my mind about buying popouts, they are really shocking shape difference, i got a list of problems with aftermarket products, most parts need modification before they will actually fit the car

68AutoBug - February 14th, 2010 at 11:14 PM

Yes Kev

the cressida should have had a Lexus badge on it... lol...

excellent car....

You can just about buy any VW part now.... new...

but the quality and fit are out the window....

Used pop outs are about all the time... never cheap.. lol

and the rubbers are available too...

Maybe We need a list of parts and the problems with them...

main problem is they don't normally have a brand on them...

apart from EMPI [usa] etc... and I don't recommend them either..

not to be confused with EMPI australia from Wolfsburg Automotive who has excellent quality parts...

LEE

zayus - February 25th, 2010 at 10:27 AM

A Cressida would have to be the ultimate sleeper! :)

How are Empi Australia parts different Lee?
I thought there was only one Empi supplying shit parts worldwide.

Joel - February 25th, 2010 at 01:22 PM

a list of parts with faults would be the entire empi catalogue

unfortunatley its all pumped out of sweatshops in ROC where quality control is a foreign concept

empi 30 years ago when it was still made in US was the ducks nuts in vw parts. like most of those companies the name and logo gets sold and next thing its low quality parts coming outta the peoples republic

most people only get stung once but there are those that keep going back and keeping them going

you see it all the time on vw forums, someone new to the vw scene that heard empi is the greatest and wants to dress up there vw with some chrome goodies then get all pissed off when it doesnt fit or breaks

*edit. kev that isnt directed at you by the way
