no i checked that once i got home. The thing i really hope isnt so is that my freinds bug had a knock and hers had a crack somewhere their

Most likely items are the body chassis mount, shocko bushes, torsion arm bushes, loose rear hub or wheel nuts.

This is really weird, my '72 Superbeetle used to have the exact same loud knock from the left-rear suspension. I assumed that it was a seized or bent shock absorber, so I changed the shocks and that seems to have fixed it. The only problem I have now is an intermittent rotational scraping from the left side somewhere. I got right in there with the wheel off and checked everything, the CVs seemed fine, less than 1mm play, the wheel bearings seemed to be fine with almost no play, axle splines were okay and everything is done up tight. New shocks and brake linings and I can't see anything which looks like being a problem. Does anyone know what this could be? It seems to get worse during engine braking, but go away during gentle acceleration and goes away completely over 70km/h. It also only occurs intermittently at lower speeds, not all the time. Sometimes going over a bump with the left side seems to stop it.

strange lol

waveman, is that intermittant scraping from the front?

wait... u said cv's, so i guess u mean the rear than. if the brake shoes in the rear drums are stickin a little after releasing the handbrake, they will do that. And moreso if u haven't driven it in a while. they make the 'scrapage' noise. Shouldn't be a bearing if intermittant.

Nath, u had any luck yet? Loose axle nut can do that too. will kill ur bearings/stub axles (spun bearing) if left loose.

Nar not yet been out all day but i took him for quick run down the road and back and i sounds like its under the back seat so i dont know but then last night it sounded like the wheel so ????

most likely the torsion bar rubbers or the shocks.

Either the shock itself can sound clunky or the bushings are flogged out
