Hi All :)
Just checking to see if anyone has fitted the new Mexico TP 1600 engines that Classic and others sell, how well do they go?
Love to here of your experience with these motors

OK if kept stock, they have a cast crankshaft, so definately on hiperformance or they wear out fast....from what I've heard, as I've never owned one.

Thanks matt

So my early 70s 1600 TP would have a better crank?

yep

original VW cranks are forged

As long as it has not been re-ground 4 times than it will be a good choice

That said - there are a lot of the cast cranks out there, both aftermarket and VW
If you just want a new motor - they "apparently" are not too bad

Remember - thay are only a long block

So you still need a donor for all the other stuff.

If you donor is in has a good case and crank - i would be more inclined to rebuild

In pretty well every aspect, unless it's in two pieces or unservicable for other reasons....dowell holes or pulley keyway flogged, reground too many times, even the end float shims can wear grooves through the end of the crank and produce an unstoppable oil leak (actually a common problem with type IV's).

Ours has only done about 4k on it in the last 2 years so it is still a bit tight. It starts well and idles nicely but it is only a 1600 so not for spirited driving. Having said that, it still pulls nicely and is very reliable.
