good Evening Vee-Dubbers.
How are we all?
Now my 70 beetle (clementine) is my daily driver now,and i drive it to work everyday bar weekends. It hasn't missed a beat(touch wood).I am very
pleased with it don't get me wrong, but sometimes, when hooning i just
want that little bit more.......ZING..
in acceleration and top speed. Is there a simple way of adding something to give it a bit more, without having to have it off the road for too long.It
has electronic ignition new carb and coil ,new exhaust and fuel pump(why am i winging i know Right)
Also it has never been the car to blow smoke or smell, but recently i noticed on start up and a little after you can smell that fuel exhaust smell. Now
im not sure if it is becuase i am alternating between 98ron and 91 ron occasionally or its just a vee dub engine. some helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.
Look forward to chatting guys.
Happy Motoring.

Well, the two easiest power upgrades are bigger carburettor(s) and a free-flowing exhaust, but you say that you've just replaced them both, so there's no point changing them now. Other than that, it's pretty hard to get any extra power out of the engine without changing the carb and exhaust, as they are the limiting factors which restrict the engine to the factory power rating.
mine is my daily as well and it has taken a LONG time to get it to that ultra reliable stage with extra zing
I have found the following 2 options gives about a 25% increase that gives it that "zing" over a stock 1600 -
Option 1
The most reliable easy way is a 1776/1916 with stock carb and exhaust
Option 2
adding dual carbs and exhaust to a 1600
Can cost if you pay some one else to jet it up for you
Yeh bizzare that is the only thing i can think off really.A pair of single port dual carbs.without having to pull it apart.
If i were to pull it apart what parts could i upgrade to get such a performance upgrade?
camshaft,thingo,pistons?thingos?doo dads?
for pep - a half decent cam
I am running a 22/62 cam that was put in by VW Preformance(??) in Canberra
Get engine parts balanced
Counter weighted crank is not necessary
Mt engine is as follows
cam 22/62
stock twin port heads and crank
dual Dellorto DRLA carbs
custom fully merged header
Scortcher electronic ignition
stock fuel pump
reckon i am somewhere between 65 and 70 HP at the wheels
Have a look through my Members Rides posts and you will see its development

Thanks for the advice lee,you like your engine bays colorful ay.lol its cool though ,nice and neat.
i have been thinking about it this week and quite frankly i have a nice little car.everything is near new,in the engine bay.
Its a small engine,so small power.Just have to live with it.I am curious about the fumes though?.....mmm.....m.m.
Bit off topic but lee for someone who has so many pictures of everything labeled and everything is it a PITA having all the extra hoses for the auto. Like the top left of the shroud. Like it mkes me want to sort em out and untangle.
You'll find your carb options are very very limited with a single port, you can get singleport manifolds for K-dogs but you would most likely have to
buy new, i bet theres not many second hand ones out there
I used to be happy once with a stock 1600 twinport with a 40mm weber, good exhaust and electronic ignition

what about 1.4 ratio rockers?
it should open the valves up a bit...
yep - but a lot of mucking round for only reasonable gain
Custom push rods
rocker geometry
Get it wrong and you will know about it pretty quick
really needs to be done at the end for additional boost
Not a first up move
