Thinking that one day i may change the current standard 69 bumper bars to something different.
What is available out there and where from?
Would love to see some photos of different or custom bars that are available.

waveman1500 - October 3rd, 2010 at 06:34 PM
You can always go for a tubular bumper. I've seen some really nice ones on competition cars, depends on the look you're going for.

In my opinion they look best painted or powder coated in white or black, not body colour.

Those styles in the pics are specifically for baja kitted beetles...
the lad would have to chop his whole front apron off just to fit it. unless you did some very serious cutting and retro fitting to have 2 inch wide
wholes for the tubes to extend all the way back to the front torsion beam...
then you will have to chop the arms of the barwork to extend far enough out from the beam to the very front of the stock bug apron / guards.

Made in the USA Briz aluminiun bars this compeny make bars for street rods customs etc come undrilied so you need to get mount brackets to suit your
beetle ( also avalable from Briz) these are not cheap but look nice because thay look good from both sides.
Paulc1964au - October 4th, 2010 at 03:19 PM
they certainly look like nice bars, I do like the billet ones however by the time you buy the bars and brackets and shipping from USA it isnt going to
be a cheap excercise
vwo60 - October 5th, 2010 at 09:28 AM
I have used a set of stainless steel blades on my early car .

Use some imagination! It's only round mild steel tube, very easy to make at home. I've seen plenty of them welded up at home with flat steel plates
which bolt in to the bumper bracket holes for a perfect stock replacement. Those were just the only photos I could find easily. Here's a photo which
I've just uploaded of a famous VW Club of SA competition car.

Hi Paul,
they might cost a bit, but don't compromise too much or you'll never be totally satisfied with Rosie each time you look at her. I'd say decide on
the ones you really want and just do it. I love the ribbed ones you posted pics of.
Fat chicks with early bumpers look awesome (IMO)
Paulc1964au - October 17th, 2010 at 05:34 PM
Yeah i am afraid to ask the price of them lol
Paulc1964au - April 22nd, 2011 at 03:06 PM
I am still looking for something different to the standard bars what type of bars are fitted for cal look?
sander288 - April 22nd, 2011 at 06:24 PM
Cal-look doesn't run bumpers;
they run T-Bars, Nerf Bar (Nudge Bar) or curved T-bars, or nothing at all

Unfortuantely they are illegal. I had them on my bug for the nearly 12 months and never had a problem. All depends on who pulls you over or notices
them. I recently removed them as i wanted to have the no-bumper look.

Dangerous protrusions so yes it's a defect but that doesn't stop people running them, particularly the ones getting pinkys done by mechanics who
don't give a crap
I've periodically had them on my bugs and not had dramas but then I had to remove the eyebrows to avoid a defect notice for the same reason, you see
people everywhere running eyebrows blissfully unaware they are an illegal dangerous protrusion.
shokwave2 - April 27th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Does anyone know why a towbar isn't classed as a dangerous protrusion? My shin has kissed a towbar hundreds of times but have never hit my t-bar or
an eyebrow.
Joel - April 27th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Most cars don't go fast enough backwards to chop someone in half with the towbar.
Paulc1964au - April 27th, 2011 at 07:26 PM
Ok well i think i wil go with the bars from CLP1 thats if I can get them shipped here.
do you have to have a front licence plate in NSW?
zayus - April 27th, 2011 at 09:43 PM
Hi Paul,
A car in NSW has to run the front plate.
I ran t-bars for over a year, never had defect notice or any type of trouble with the law.
As for t-bars being considered a protrusion, what is a bumper then?
Yes, the RTA considers t-bars a protrsion, but, come on ...
A pedestrian being hit by a Beetle with bumpers, is going to sustain some major injuries.
Paul, avoid those Baja style bumpers!
Paulc1964au - April 28th, 2011 at 07:28 PM
thanks Bryce certainly will not be installing baja bars most likely the billet bars
