Perth VW T1 - Custom Seats, Belts and Carpet!
Gangel - October 21st, 2010 at 04:27 PM

Hi Ppls,

*first post*!!

I'm 25 and restoring/modding a covertible 66 T1.

I have added a Carrera kit (minus the bonnet) and "herbie-ised" it!

Although the exterior is coming along I'm in a mix about what to do inside.

Currently it has NO carpet (except for front foot panel) and its seats are DEAD.

My dad is good with DIY stuff and we have 80% finished the rewire of electrics + custom basic dash with buttons.

I now need to find "student viable" seats for the front as well as a place to get carpet done and seat belts.

As a basic question, do I have to stick to standard seats or are there such a thing as universal seats that The bottom slider can be fitted and adjusted (just a guess??)

I'm a bit vague above, but in the end i'm in Perth and I cant find any decent seats around... am I looking in the wrong place??

Have a look around the parts traders, admitedly this was 15 years ago but we found some great secondhand seats at one place that they didn't have much luck selling and we picked them up for 50 bucks for the pair. As or the carpet have a go yourself. If you can afford the genuine then go for it but otherwise you can achieve anice look with a variety of carpets cheaply available form a carpet retailer. Marine stuf is good as its hardy...

ty

AussieDub,
-what kind of seats did you get
-Carpet-wise I want to do it myself but am worried how to cut it (sadly!) and how to trim edges nicely. I dont want some feral taggy sides when im doing so much work on the linings of the car!!

vwo60
-Honda seats?? How did you make them fit! I really want to add this kind of thing to my vehicle rather than standards but how about the framing for them to sit on? :)

Appreciate the feedback, cheers pplz :)

vwo60 is right, ebay is a cheap place for good seats.

You can quite often find good late model stuff cheap that ricer boys have ripped out to fit hektik racing buckets.

I got some gen5 Celica seats for mine, $50 for front and rears

Just make sure theyre not too wide to get to the handbrake

Easy as to fit too
I just unclipped the stock vw seats from the runners, Cut the stock runners off the celica seats and welded some brackets to the bottom so they could bolt to the vw runners

I'd recomend making the seats bolt to the runners instead of welding them, as most modern seats are too wide to get far enough forward to slide onto vw rails.
that nearly caught me out.

Door panels and carpet are also piece of piss to make up as well

Thanks Joel,

Ive done my own door panels but as I mentioned, I dont know how to cut the carpet + do you glue it down?

Is a proper machine used or just a bl**dy sharp stanley knife?

As for the welding.. I think my Dad's geting a welding kit in the next few weeks so there's my opportunity!
Thanks agian, ill prob msg u some q's regarding the seats if that ok at a later stage?
