Project Wide 5
I have a 1970 beetle shell on a 1966 pan with swing axle, ball joint and wide 5. it has adjustable front end and dropped spindles.
Just wondering if its possible/feasible to use this as a base for a 2L draw through turbo with a strengthened box/axles/appropriate mounts/disc brakes
etc. or if it will be better to start with a different base car, or swap out the 1966 chassis and get a year correct chassis and go from there. (specs
I have settled on - around 2007cc with Holley 500cfm Carb and suitable turbo.
The project is in the research phase at the moment, and I won't be able to start until a workshop gets completed (due to NT dust) but just looking
for comments, suggestions of products I can use(local to Oz if possible),
Here are the thoughts I have currently:
5 speed Berg kit - strengthened case or use current
LowBugget turn key or kit 2007cc turbo
CB Performance kit - and turbo kit
Stan Pobjoy - if non-turbo
Craig/Glenn Torrens gearbox mount/discs
Billet axles or something strong enough up to 200-300hp just in case.
Tramp bars or VW solution
Am I on the right track, or is there something I have missed? or does anyone know local alternatives
I am looking at an overall build cost of $10000 over about 3-4 years with driving occurring whilst saving / building.
I can't stop thinking about this. need feedback, comments and suggestions
Why and how have you ended up with a late-model shell on an early pan? I suppose it depends what you're going to change. If you've already got a different front end on there and you're going to be upgrading the box and going to 12V and so forth, then it should end up basically the same as a 1970 pan as far as I know. Wait for some experts to come along and comment though, I don't know much about the earlier pre-'68 cars.
It's Alan Agyiks creation using the left over parts from his awesome VWMA 2007 featured 1966 body on 1970 pan. The car is great as is, but I just
need to know if there are any limitations on the pan with the setup I want. Basically I want bulk power any way I can get it, with the weak link being
the tyres.
Oh yeah and its already 12V with blade fuses and electronic fuel pump.
I've seen some swing axle drag beetles, so I feel there should be options out there.
Cheers for your comments
Stick with what you've got, except for the brakes, but you don't say what you want to do wth all that hp, drag, drag/street, circuit, etc etc???
That will make the difference if double joint (irs) rear suspension is required.

Matt,
Mainly a streeter that can be dialled up for occasional drag racing. We have one drag meet a year here in Tennant Creek, and the stocko 1600 isn't
going to cut the mustard against the V8s. My aim for times would have to be 12.9 1/4 mile and go from there. I could trailer it to Warwick, but damn
that drive. 2600kms one way, swore I will never do it again.

Try the subaru gear box conversion rather that the gene berg 5 speed, much stronger and cheaper, there is a forum on this site for that gear box.
cheers Matt and 60 for your suggestions. its still miles off so I've got heaps of time to think about it.
I think i'll just strenthen the internals of the swinger, and make an engine choice from there.
I have now remembered about rotaries, and seeing the performance of some on this forum lately, it is tempting. damn radiators!

Yeah MAtt you are right - hence the purpose of this thread, to nut stuff out, before realising I have bitten of more than I could chew.
I will stick with the air cooled based, as it is part of what I know and everyone on here seems to have great success with the tried and true
methods, plus I have the wealth of knowledge the you guys are, to run things by.
I had a quick look at what is required for a non vw transplant and, again, DAMN, complex ECUs foreign weird parts that do who knows what. Whilst they
have there place(conversions), I dont have the time, knowledge or inclination to be trouble shooting the WHOLE time of the build. Turn key VW is
looking good. as kids + shift work + wife = nil time.
DO you find that the further along you get in life, you have more money than ever to do what yu dreamt of when you were young, but no time in which to
spend it or enjoy the things you have bought? I was looking at posts on here from 7 years ago and I was talking about the same stuff! no time kids
etc.
I need to become rich and not to have to go to work.....
Ha! Yeah, I know what you mean.
You always have retirement to look forward to! Just think of it as buying all of the pieces to a jigsaw to be put together in your golden years. 50
years is a bit too long to wait for me, so it will be a rush job now.
Actually, that sounds good as well. Might try for both.
