Help T1 64 and 66?
Joel - October 25th, 2010 at 08:34 PM

Assuming they're both deluxes the 64 would be 1200 and 66 1300.

visually 66 would have 1300 decklid script, most 66 had single colour basket weave interior with round top seats, 64 would be 2 tone with square tops.

Aussie bugs all had the dipswitch on the floor till fatchicks started in 68

If its a 1300 you can tell what year by the 3rd number of your vin if its a 66 then it the chassis number will start off 196 xxx xxx

Certainly looks like my 66. Also they have the wider indicator lights on the wings.

Yes while the Aussie '64 and '66 models are a lot more similar that Euro '64 and '66 Beetles are, there are still numerous differences.

As Joel says, the '66 has a 1300 engine and an improved gearbox. The brakes are different, with slightly bigger drums.

'64 has no engine cover badging, '66 has '1300'. The '66 front bonnet VW badge is flatter, and the windscreen washer jet housing is squarer. The '66 sunvisors are mounted separately from the rear vision mirror, while the '64's are all one-piece. The '66 will have 'roll top' front seats and a flat-folding rear seat, which the '64 doesn't have.

The front blinkers on the '64 and the '66 are the same (lenses were available in both clear and amber). It was the '61-'63 that had narrower ones.

Check the chassis number, and the manufacturer's plate behind the spare wheel. Also look for date stamps on the wheel centres, on the back of the speedo and under the front blinker chrome covers.
