Speedo problem
jjwebb123 - October 27th, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Hello Ther
When i accelerate my speedo doesn't zoom up to the current speed like it used to,it wobbles up and continues to wobble around the current speed all over the place. As it changes it also makes a slight whining noise. Is there any cause or fix for this?

Thanks in Advance

I'd say the cable is on the way out but you might get it to settle down if you unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo and squirt down spray lubricant, gravity will get it right down the cable, do it a few times.

Usually a sign the cables has lost a few strands

I think I still have some standard bug speedo cables left if it snaps on you

my speedo has wobbled around since I've owned my beetle. Owned it for 3.5yrs and always wobbles about. can still tell what speed your doing cause it doesn't wobble around the whole place just a few millimeters or so.

YES sounds like the cable is coming apart...
they break strand by strand....
try taking the cable ferrule off the speedo
and then put 5+ drops of engine oil down the cable inner...

you have to do it slowly... one drop at a time...

My needle used to wobble at low speed,
but since pouring a bit of oil down the cable...
hasn't wobbled since....
I have a new speedo cable here to replace it..
but haven't had too yet...lol
