ADVISE NEEDED - Super bug Front end Problems
DylanTheDubber - November 7th, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Hey guys can someone help us out with what needs doing to fix this problem. the car seems like its bouncing around alot and then when we hit a pot hole the car slides out onto the other side of the road into on-coming trafic. this is major and serious problem. We thinking maybe bushings or struts?

Any Advice greatly appreciated plz comment.

Struts as well would be a good idea by the sound of it.

DylanTheDubber - November 7th, 2010 at 05:33 PM

Ok Thanks Guys. Now on the list is :

- 30mm Lowered struts
- Tottal Kit ( Urethene Bushes )

check the tyre pressures too, people who dont know vws have habits of putting 30psi all round, thatll make the front bounce all over the place, you only need 18-20psi in the front of a bug

DylanTheDubber - November 8th, 2010 at 05:47 AM

Ok Thanks Joel , so how much in the back? we runnig 195/14" all round

From Dylan

Joel - November 8th, 2010 at 06:11 AM

28-30psi in the back

vw54 - November 8th, 2010 at 06:40 AM

yep tyre pressure are a big killer of handling qualities

DylanTheDubber - November 8th, 2010 at 04:12 PM

Front Tyres now on 20 psi and rears on 25 Handaling alot better but the bushes and struts still need replacing they will be done by the end of december.

I might be a bit old fashioned, but if a car ended up on the other side of the road when it hit a bump, I would seek professional help before you kill yourself or somebody else.
How things have changed since I was a boy!

I think that is a very sensible idea Dave!

Um Dave im not sure what your trying to say but we have mates who are mechanics and know all bout these in a "profeshional mechanical sence" The car is being taken to the workshop today???

DylanTheDubber - November 9th, 2010 at 05:18 PM

Ok well we went to a mate at his mechanical workshop and he checked over the car and said bushes are all ok but are old and a bit worn the front brake lines need replacing they had bubbles and was causing brakes to build up presure then relese and causing car to move forward then holding back then releasing again. Steering damper was the cause of the front sliding out and struts are ok but they will be replaced with new 80mm lowered struts.

Hi Dylan

If it still has rubber bushes they need changing for sure. Over the years I've found 2 types of mechanics, those that understood VWs and those that didn't, I hope yours is the former.

Steve ,
Yeah I know what to mean but Brenden has a 2 Kombi and a early 60's bug and we will be putting a urethane bushes kit in it after Christmas when the struts go in.

Kool Mate great way to do it on the cheap by welding it yourself although im not a top welder and would'nt be confident on doing that with main supension parts liek that so thats why i have grabed some 80mm drop struts while i can. Also erethen bushes kit wanted, where did you get yours from and how much Hel bus?

helbus - November 9th, 2010 at 07:15 PM

The urethane bush kit was easy to buy from my local VW parts mechanic, along with the strut inserts, steering damper and ball joints. The wheel alignment finished it all off well.

DylanTheDubber - November 9th, 2010 at 07:16 PM

Ok Thanks , How much was the bushes kit mate?

I really don't remember. My head injuries from past make me unable to remember a lot of things.

DylanTheDubber - November 9th, 2010 at 08:23 PM

Oh ok well I know there over $100 anyways.
